How to make cashew milk

This recipe is so easy to make, you’ll be wondering why you’ve been guzzling down dairy milk for so many years.

All you have to do is soak the cashews, then place them in the K-Mojo DigiMaster blender along with some dates, vanilla bean paste, a pinch of sea salt and three cups of water. This nut milk recipe is as simple as that!

Once you’ve made this recipe, you’ll realize how delicious it is. You’ll be adding it to your morning coffee, serving with your favorite breakfast cereal and using it to make creamy sauces and all kinds of savory delights.

That’s the joy of making your own homemade nut milk. It’s a super simple process, it’s much healthier than regular dairy milk, tastes great and has no added sugars. As non-dairy milks go, it’s one of the best.

Cashews, dates, vanilla & salt

Is homemade cashew milk good for you?

It’s packed full of essential vitamins and minerals. It’s also lactose-free, making it a great alternative to cow’s milk for people that are lactose intolerant.

The vitamins and minerals it contains include vitamin K, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium. It’s also high in healthy unsaturated fats, which are good for heart health. It also contains antioxidant compounds that are very beneficial for eye health.

It may also improve your blood sugar control and health of your skin, as well as help to prevent serious diseases like cancer.

Is cashew milk good for weight loss?

Unsweetened cashew milk contains just 25 calories per cup, compared to 83 calories per cup of skimmed milk. So, yes, it’s great for weight loss.

It does contain a certain amount of fat, but these are unsaturated fatty acids that contain lots of health benefits.

What does cashew milk taste like?

Surprise, surprise… it tastes nutty!

Actually, it only has a mild nuttiness. With a hint of saltiness and a little bit of sweetness, cashew milk has a very plain, inoffensive taste. This makes it great for those who balk at the heavy ‘milkiness’ of milk and for those who want a mild, dairy free alternative.

Some store-bought cashew milks taste a little sweeter than your average. With homemade, you can play with the taste until your heart’s content. That’s the beauty of this recipe – it all comes down to personal taste.

Is cashew milk sweet?

Store bought stuff can sometimes be sweet. You can get both sweetened and unsweetened versions. Still, it’s naturally sweeter than other dairy free nut milks like almond milk and other plant-based milks like soy milk.

Homemade cashew milk can be tailored to your taste. If you prefer it sweet, add extra maple syrup to the mix. If you’re sweet enough, add just a subtle amount.

Is cashew milk good in coffee?

It’s great when added to coffee. It can bring a creamy thickness that works really well, particularly with lattes, and its slight nutty flavor works in harmony with the flavor of coffee.

How long does cashew milk last?

When stored in the fridge, it will last 3-4 days.

How do you know when cashew milk has gone bad?

When it starts hurling insults at you.

But seriously, when it starts to take a more yellowy color, it’s probably a sign that it’s starting to go bad. A big indication will be the smell – it’ll take on a slightly off odor.

Does cashew milk have calcium?

Yes! Cashew milk actually contains more calcium than cow’s milk.

Calcium is crucial to maintaining healthy bones, which makes cashew milk a great healthy alternative to cow’s milk and one of the healthiest nut milks around.

Is cashew milk vegan?

Yes, it’s 100% vegan and plant-based. Cashew milk is dairy free and completely free of any animal products.

How many calories in cashew milk?

With just 25 calories per cup, compared to 83 calories per cup of skimmed, it’s one of the lowest calorie nut milks around.

How long should you soak cashews?

This recipe calls for you to soak your cashews overnight.

If you don’t have time, you can soak them the fast way. Place in a pot of water, bring the water to the boil, then remove from the heat and cover. Then wait for 15 minutes and drain.

Be careful not to soak your cashews for too long. They’ll become unusable if you do.

How do I know if I’ve soaked my cashews for too long?

When you soak cashews for too long, they will start to smell and taste bad. You’ll also be able to tell if you’ve soaked them for too long if the soaking water turns slightly slimy, with a gel-like appearance.

When soaking cashews overnight, be sure to rinse them off as soon as you get up. Any longer than 8 hours and you risk over soaking them.

If you do over soak them, throw them away and start soaking from scratch.

Is cashew milk gluten free?

Yes! As well as being 100% vegan, it’s completely gluten free.

How much protein is in cashew milk?

One cup of homemade cashew milk contains about 5g of protein.

Do you need to refrigerate cashew milk?

Yes. Once you’ve made it, you’ll need to keep it in the fridge. It’ll keep for about 3-4 days.

Can you bake with cashew milk?

It’s a great ingredient to use when baking. It has a mild nutty flavor, which makes it very flexible, as it won’t overpower other flavors.

Can you freeze cashew milk?

Yes, you can. In fact, using ice trays to freeze cashew milk is a great way to keep individual portions fresh for longer. Each time you want some, you can pop a portion out and heat it up accordingly.

Is cashew milk healthier than cow’s milk?

In many ways it’s healthier than cow’s milk. Although it contains less protein, cashew milk has higher levels of healthy unsaturated fats, iron and magnesium.

For those who have trouble digesting lactose, cashew milk is a lot healthier than cow’s milk.

How do you make cashew milk smooth?

Homemade cashew milk has a delicious creamy texture that you’ll love if you want something to serve in coffee or with your breakfast cereal. Still, the creamy texture isn’t for everyone.

If you prefer a smoother blend to your nut milk, you can strain it by pouring it through a muslin into a separate bowl or container. This will filter out the cashew pulp, leaving you with a thinner texture.

What are the other types of dairy-free milk?

Nowadays, there are so many amazing options available for vegan milk lovers, those who are lactose intolerant or those who dislike cow’s milk.

For me, homemade cashew milk is one of the best, so you should definitely try out this recipe.

You should also try to make oat milk too, especially if you’re looking to make a vegan alternative that’s creamy in texture. Oat milk goes perfectly with breakfast cereals and as part of dessert recipes. Check out this Vegan Oat Milk recipe.

Another good option is almond milk. Another one delicious nut milks, it’s healthy, easy and quick to make and tastes fantastic.

Rice, soy and coconut milk are all delicious and relatively easy to make. If you don’t want to make them at home, all of these dairy-free milks are available from good supermarkets and health food stores.

Making your own cashew milk is easier than you think. Soak some cashew nuts first before blending them with dates, water and vanilla. Use as you would do normal milk, it really is that versatile!

Ingredients

Units
  • 160g (1 cup) raw cashews
  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted
  • 750ml (3 cups) water
  • 5ml (1 tsp) vanilla bean paste
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients in the K-Mojo DigiMaster’s blender and blitz until smooth.
  • This is suitable to serve as is, in the shape of a drink, with cereal or in cooking. Enjoy!

Notes

  • If you’re in a hurry or simply forgot, you can cover the cashews in boiled water for 15 minutes then you can proceed with the recipe, as noted above.
  • For a smoother finish and if you have some muslin at hand, pour the cashew milk through the muslin to get rid of the cashew slurry. It’s entirely up to you - both taste delicious and my son gives the rustic version a big thumbs up!

This very creepy drink will give you chills just looking at it. Whether hosting a Halloween party or just trying to creep your friends out, this Zombie brain shot is sure to appeal to any thrill seeker.

Zombie Brain Shots.

This spooky shot is made by combining peach schnapps, Bailey's Irish Cream, Creme De Menthe, and grenadine in a shot glass to create a totally creepy visual experience. What's even more amazing is that it really looks like a zombie's brain!

The zombie brain shot is a take on the Zombie Brain Hemorrhage shot. Instead of Creme de menthe, the Zombie Brain Hemorrhage shot has melon liqueur in it, giving it a fruitier flavor, but the same reaction and a similar appearance.

Like an Irish car bomb, which features Guinness beer, Bailey's Irish cream curdles when it reacts to the alcohol in the shot glass. This curdling of the Irish cream creates not only an interesting texture in your mouth when you shoot it, but the appearance of zombie brains.

This recipe is inspired by the Alien Brain Hemorrhage Shot on my website which uses blue curacao instead of Creme de menthe. The right place to serve this creamy zombie brain shot is at a Halloween party along with plenty of appetizers to keep the alcohol from going straight to your non-zombie brain. Tequila sunrise jello shots or a Vampire's Kiss Cocktail are also great party recipes.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • It's a fun and unique party drink
  • It looks creepy like real zombie brains
  • It tastes creamy, fruity, and a little minty
  • It comes together quickly and is entertaining to watch
Everything needed to make a zombie brain shot.

Equipment Needed For This Recipe

  • Shot glasses - use a shot glass to create your work of terrifying art. Layer your different liqueurs directly into the shot glass before enjoying.
  • Jigger - used for measuring out your peach schnapps, Irish cream, creme de menthe, and grenadine into your shot glass
  • Spoon - a simple teaspoon is all that is needed to carefully and slowly pour the ingredients over to come together in the shot glass, creating this creepy drink.

Ingredients You'll Need For This Recipe

  • Bailey's Irish Cream - this classic Irish cream liqueur combines a velvety texture with delicious Irish whiskey for a smooth taste
  • Creme De Menthe - this cool and minty liqueur is a great addition to mixed drinks and lends a refreshing element to this zombie brain shot
  • Peach schnapps - this sweet and fragrant peachy liqueur adds a fruity note to the shot
  • Grenadine - a non-alcoholic component added to cocktails to give it slight tartness with sweet vanilla notes

Top Tip

Really slowly pour the Irish cream into the half filled shot glass to achieve the ultimate creepy zombie brain visual.

Zombie brain shots.

What to Serve With Your Zombie brain shot

This fun drink is great when enjoyed all by itself, but accompanying it with some desserts or munchies will make the evening that much better!

Desserts

These Halloween-themed desserts are good anytime but are a really fun addition to the zombie brain shot at a party!

  • Chocolate Orange Brownies - these rich brownies get their citrus flavor from orange Angostura bitters, an addition to several cocktails. A unique dessert to accompany a unique drink like the zombie brain shot
  • Halloween Toffee Apple Cake - this spooky Halloween-themed dessert cake is perfect to go along with zombie brain shots at your party
  • Meringue Ghosts - these fun-themed desserts are just right for a Halloween display accompanying your freshly poured zombie brain shots

Snacks

Keeping your guests full of food will help to prevent anyone from feeling the pain from overindulging. These recipes are all appropriate for a party where you may set up a buffet-style food layout.

  • Beet Hummus - delicious and frightfully red, this appetizer is on the healthy side for those who dare to redeem themselves after several shots of zombie's brains
  • Devils On Horseback - these totally creepy-sounding appetizers are actually just prunes wrapped in bacon. Delicious and addictive, they are right on theme with Halloween recipes for a party
  • BBQ Meatballs - everyone loves a meatball, and these are perfect to go along with a drink or two
  • White Bean Dip - another appetizer on the lighter side, this white bean dip is just delicious and belongs at every party no matter what the theme

Cocktails

If you're looking for some more fun drinks to serve up at a Halloween party, here are a few suggestions to keep your guests happy in between rounds or two of a zombie brain shot.

  • Incredible Hulk Drink - this neon color-changing drink is a great way to impress your guests
  • Long Vodka - a simple take on the gimlet, a long vodka is an easy drink to mix up in batches or one by one for your guests
  • Alien Brain Hemorrhage Shot - similar to the zombie brain shot, the alien brain hemorrhage shot uses Bailey's, blue curacao, peach schnapps, and the heavy syrup grenadine to create another Halloween recipe that will totally creep out your guests
Zombie brain shots in front of alcohol bottles.

Popular Substitutions to the Zombie brain shot

There are a few possible substitutions that can be made to this spooky zombie brains in a shot glass

  • Peach schnapps - instead of using peach schnapps, you can reach for triple sec, which is non alcoholic, but has a sweet orange flavor instead of peach
  • Grenadine - to replace the heavy syrup grenadine, some simple syrup with a few dashes of cherry or pomegranate juice will do the trick in this brain shot
  • Creme De Menthe - use melon liqueur in your zombie brain shot to make a Zombie Brain Hemorrhage shot

Variations to the Zombie brain shot

I think you will love this zombie brain shot recipe as is, but if you would like to switch it up a bit there are several ways you can do so.

  • Instead of making this recipe in a shot glass, scale up the ingredients by two or three. You will follow the same steps of pouring the ingredients into a larger glass slowly to get the appearance of a zombie brain.
  • Using a squeeze bottle instead of a jigger to pour out the alcohol into the shot glass may help with the accuracy and with the appearance of the zombie brain shot
  • You can omit the Creme De Menthe from this brain shot, and replace with another liqueur if you prefer. The most important component is the Irish cream, which creates the illusion of a zombie brain in a shot glass

Top Tip

For a clearer fine line between the schnapps and Bailey’s Irish cream, chill the peach schnapps first.

Zombie brain shot.

Why Does This Shot Look Like Brains?

This creepy Halloween inspired shot gets its brain-like weird appearance from the curdling of the Irish cream by the alcohol in the peach schnapps and Creme De Menthe.

Can I Scale this Recipe?

Yes, you can scale this shot into a full drink by doubling or tripling the recipe. Keep in mind that you will want to drink it relatively quickly as the texture of the curdled Irish cream does not age well.

Can I Make This Recipe Ahead of Time?

No, I wouldn't mix this recipe up too early. This crazy shot is best when made with an audience and shouldn't sit around for too long before you shoot it down the hatch.

Where Do the Colors in This Shot Come From?

The colors in this shot come from the light tan of the Irish cream, green from the Creme De Menthe, and red from a few dashes of grenadine.

What Does This Recipe Taste Like?

If you're wondering what this daring shot tastes like, it has a creamy and fruity flavor with a light mint tingle from the Creme De Menthe.

A delicious dessert drink that’s perfect for the holiday season, boiled custard will make you feel all warm and wonderful inside.

It’s simple to prepare and tastes like a dream. So, if you like sweet milky treats, try this Southern time-honored tradition. It’s the perfect winter warmer.

Boiled custard recipe

This recipe is all about simple ingredients blending together to form something magical. There’s no wonder it’s so popular over the holidays! All you need is eggs, milk, cream sugar, vanilla and a little bit of time on your hands.

Once you’ve mastered the timing of this recipe, you’ll be whipping up a batch every year. Family and friends will absolutely love it – there’s a reason people have been making this for hundreds of years! It’s got that blissful taste and texture that seems to make time stand still for a few seconds.

Part dessert. Part drink. Part nirvana!

Products you’ll need for this recipe

There are a few key ingredients that you’ll need to make this recipe.

  • Saucepan – get a good quality saucepan to make this recipe.
  • Double boiler – you can even use a double boiler, which is a brilliant kitchen tool. It’s perfect for subtle, gentle heating.
  • Wooden spoon – this recipe calls for a lot of stirring, so take the time to invest in a quality spoon.
  • Large mixing bowl – you’ll need a large mixing bowl to cool your creamy dessert, before starting the second stage of the heating process.
  • Electric whisk – get one of these to whisk up the sugar and eggs. If you want to keep it old school and like to put the work in, get a regular balloon whisk
  • Food thermometer – having a thermometer is the best way to make sure your dessert is heated to the correct temperature.
  • Vanilla paste or vanilla extract – when it comes to vanilla, you can never have enough. Get yourself a big batch of paste or extract – you’ll most likely use it in every dessert recipe!
  • Granulated sugar – good quality granulated is a key part of this dish.
  • Whipped cream dispenser – once you’ve made your delicious boiled custard, use this nifty gadget for a delectable whipped cream topping. Make sure you keep stocked up with chargers for your dispenser.
  • Ground nutmeg – a sprinkling of ground nutmeg will add a little spice to your heavenly, creamy dessert drink.

What is boiled custard?

Boiled custard is a dessert drink that goes down deliciously well, particularly around the holidays when you really fancy a sweet treat. It’s traditionally made using whole milk, double cream and egg yolks, with vanilla flavoring to give it that beautiful rich taste.

Funnily enough, despite the name, the key to cooking perfect boiled custard is heating it gently. Boiling the milk is not what this recipe – or any recipe for that matter – is all about. Boiled milk is just bad, period. The key is to bring it to the brink of boiling point, then remove it. Afterwards comes the slow cook, constant stir part.

So, delicious boiled custard is all about patience and timing. Taking your time to constantly stir the hot milk - there’s a reason it’s sometimes called ‘stirred custard’ - and get it to a perfectly thick consistency.

How do you thicken boiled custard?

If your boiled custard ends up too thin, don’t despair! There are a few little tricks you can pull to get that delicious thick consistency.

First of all, you can use a thickening agent. A paste made from regular flour and water works perfectly. Use 2 tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of cold water per cup of custard. Add the paste as the mix simmers on the stove and stir until it thickens to your desired consistency.

You can also use cornstarch, which is a really useful thickening agent. If you want to use cornstarch to thicken your custard, make a paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Again, add the thickener paste as it gently simmers on the stove. It should thicken in no time at all.

You can also add tapioca to your custard to get it nice and thick. Just add a tablespoon as it cooks on the hob – no water is needed.

Arrowroot is also a great thickener. Find out more about this thickener and other arrowroot substitutes.

What happens if you boil custard?

The key to a good consistency is heating it gently. The liquid reaches a temperature where the milk and egg proteins unfurl and begin to bond. Aww, how sweet.

Get them too hot though and that sweetness turns gross. Too many proteins bond and you’ll end up with one big clump fest. That’s basically a curdled custardy mess that’s far from appetizing.

It’s recommended that you get the custard to between 160°F and 180°F. Get yourself a food thermometer and you’ll never end up with it curdled or split.

If you do, there are things you can do to fix it. An immersion blender is an amazing quick fix. It’ll break down the lumps in an instant.

You could also plunge the saucepan into cold water (obviously, don’t get any cold water in the custard) and whisk the custard for up to 5 minutes. You should have perfectly smooth custard by this point.

What's the difference between eggnog and boiled custard?

Both eggnog and custard pretty much share the same basic ingredients.

There’s a big difference between eggnog and custard. Eggnog isn’t heated, whereas custard is. As it’s heated, custard is thick and creamy, almost like a velvety dessert sauce that you can drink.

Eggnog, on the other hand, is quite fluidy as it hasn’t been heated.

Is boiled custard a southern thing?

In the South, boiled custard is an age-old tradition typically made during the holiday season. Many historians agree that the dish goes as far back as 1607, when the first English boats arrived in Jamestown. Since then, this classic custard drink has been cooked in kitchens all over the South.

Around the holidays, lots of grocery stores sell boiled custard. Kroger boiled custard is particularly popular during the holidays.

Still, if you want my advice, make your own. It’ll taste infinitely better and will be WAY more satisfying.

More irresistible dessert recipes

  • Chocolate orange cheesecake – three words that just scream “eat me!” Yes, it’s as good as it sounds. If you’re planning on having an indulgent holiday season, this is the dish for you.
  • Chocolate fairy cakes with Amarula buttercream – these little beauties are just divine. The cakes are so light, moist and tasty, while the buttercream – with the addition of the secret ingredient Amarula – has to be tasted to be believed.
  • Cherry brownies – rich, moist, gooey and dangerously addictive, this is the brownie recipe to end all brownie recipes.
  • Vegan oat cookies – a healthier option that still tastes absolutely fantastic.
  • Cherry crumble pie –as fruit pies go, this is up there with the best.

Description

Boiled Custard is a traditional holiday drink that is enjoyed in the South every Christmas. Cheap and easy to prepare, this is a family favorite!

Ingredients

Units
  • 500ml (2 cups) double cream
  • 500ml (2 cups) whole milk
  • 10ml (2 tsp) vanilla paste or extract
  • 125ml (½ cup) granulated sugar
  • 5 large egg yolks
  • [optional] whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Combine the cream, milk and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to the boil then remove from the heat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks, until the mixture has gone pale in colour and doubled in size.
  3. Temper hot milky mixture into the sugar yolk mixture, by slowly adding hot milky mixture about 60ml (¼ cup) at a time, whisking to distribute heat. Once half of the milky mixture has been added, transfer mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milky mixture.
  4. Place the saucepan over low heat. Stir continuously until mixture reaches nappé consistency, or 80°C (180°F) on a kitchen thermometer.
  5. Remove from heat and pour the custard into a large mixing bowl. Place the bowl into icy water and stir until the custard has cooled.
  6. Once it has cooled to a suitable temperature, it is ready to drink.
  7. For an added touch, top with whipped cream and grate nutmeg over the top. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Nappé consistency is when you run your finger through the mixture on the back of a spoon and the mixture doesn’t run through the gap you created.
  • If you want to experiment, you can play with all different kinds of flavours.
  • Use different flavoured extracts, such as orange, coconut, lemon and lime.
  • Spice-wise, you can add ground cinnamon, allspice, pumpkin spice, or whatever takes your fancy.
  • For a more adult version, you might even want to add some alcohol. Cointreau will give you a lovely orange taste, Baileys or Amarula for a creamy liqueur flavour. Shots of whisky works marvellously. Pssst, try honey whisky from Jack Daniel’s.

Is it really a proper Christmas without eggnog?

glass of eggnog and cinnamon.

If you're already on board with just how great eggnog is, you'll know just how much its silky smooth deliciousness brings to the holiday season. However, you're not a fan, I'm going to ask you to suspend your disbelief for just a moment.

That's because my eggnog recipe is here to show you just what you've been missing. For me, when it's made correctly, homemade eggnog is a truly sensational festive recipe that gets you in the Christmas spirit.

It's perfect for parties, ideal for a comforting winter evening treat, and is set to become a holiday staple in your home. Don't believe me... just one sip and you'll be won over. Trust me.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Eggnog Recipe

  • This eggnog is rich and delicious
  • It’s smooth, velvety and creamy
  • It's a million miles better than store bought eggnog
  • The ingredients are totally natural with no additives
  • It’s one of those great easy homemade Christmas recipes that makes the festive season extra special
ingredients for eggnog.

Equipment Needed To Make Eggnog

There are a few key items you’ll need for this eggnog:

  • High speed blender – any chef will tell you, a high speed blender is your best friend! For this recipe, it’ll help you get the perfect texture to your holiday drink.
  • Serving glasses – a glass of delicious festive eggnog should be served in the very best way possible.

What to Serve with Eggnog

Accompaniments

This Christmas tipple is made all the more delicious with the addition of festive treats, fresh out of the oven. Try with these Gingerbread Cinnamon Rolls, Mexican Pig Cookies, eggnog cookies or Gingerbread Apple Pie Cake.

Top Tip

Don’t over-blend the eggnog mixture, as you might end up with a curdled texture.

Recipe Variations

Non alcoholic eggnog

Want to keep this eggnog recipe alcohol free? Don’t worry, it can be easily adapted. Simply add an almond syrup or a similar kind of flavorful syrup in place of the rum and bourbon.

Spice things up

Eggnog is typically flavored with three key spices: ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Feel free to spice things up by adding a bit of allspice, pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice.

Serve warm

For me, eggnog is best served chilled. However, there’s definitely a case to be made for warm eggnog. It’s a wonderful winter warmer, especially in the evening when you need that extra little shot of comfort to get you all warm and cozy.

So, if you prefer your eggnog warm, you can simply heat it up in the microwave or on the hob.

Go extra decadent

Fancy really getting into the Christmas spirit with a super indulgent holiday drink? Take things to another level with a helping of cream or whipped cream on top of your egg nog. You could also sweeten the deal with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Make it vegan

You can easily adapt this recipe to make it vegan. Just check out my vegan eggnog recipe.

mixed eggnog.

Popular substitutions

If you’re missing certain ingredients or prefer a different ingredient over one listed in this eggnog recipe, you can use a substitution. Here are a few ideas:

Alternative alcohol

You don’t have to use bourbon and rum as the alcohol element in this eggnog recipe. Whisky and/or brandy are good alternatives, as are vodka, coffee liqueur, or dairy-free Kahlúa.

Vanilla extract

Don’t have any vanilla paste? Substitute in an equal amount of vanilla extract.

Alternative sweetener

I’ve gone for caster sugar in this recipe, but feel free to swap it for equal amounts of brown sugar, vanilla sugar, coconut sugar or a suitable sweetener. You could also use maple syrup.

For a healthier sweetener, try adding a handful of prunes to the mix before blending.

Top Tip

You can serve eggnog warm or cold, although for me it’s a lot better when chilled in the fridge for a couple of hours.

glass of eggnog and cookies.

What is eggnog?

Traditional eggnog is a rich, creamy, alcoholic drink served during the Holiday season. It’s usually made with raw egg, milk, rum, brandy, sugar and spices, then blended up until smooth and velvety.

What does eggnog taste like?

Delicious! Homemade eggnog is like a rich, subtly spiced melted ice cream with a sweet kick of booze to make you feel all Christmassy inside.

What is eggnog made of?

It's made from eggs, sugar, milk and cream, together with alcohol such as rum and bourbon, as well as flavorings like vanilla.

How many egg yolks are in eggnog?

There are four large raw eggs in this eggnog recipe.

Who invented eggnog?

No one really knows the exact origins of this famous Christmas drink. It’s thought to have been created in Medieval Britain, when the upper classes would blend milk, eggs and sherry.

Soon spices were added and, over the years, it became one of the classic Christmas recipes.

How do I store eggnog?

Eggnog should be stored in an airtight container and kept in the fridge. Don’t forget to let your eggnog cool before storing it.

How long does eggnog last?

When stored in the fridge, you can keep eggnog for up to five days. Give it a shake or a stir before serving, as there’ll be some natural separation.

Can you freeze this recipe?

Yes! You can store the whole thing in an airtight freezable container or you can freeze it in individual ice cubes. Simply pour your eggnog into ice tray compartments and put the ice tray in the freezer. It will keep for up to a month.

How do you reheat eggnog?

Either in the microwave, with 30 second blasts until warm; or in a saucepan on the hob, on a low to medium heat while stirring constantly.

Can this holiday drink recipe be scaled?

Absolutely! If you’re having a big festive party and want extra eggnog servings, double the ingredients and make a big batch!

Is this hot milk mixture gluten free?

Yes, eggnog is completely gluten free!

Can this eggnog recipe be prepped ahead of time?

Absolutely. In fact, eggnog tastes even better when you let it sit for 24 hours. This is because the flavors have a chance to intwine and mingle, giving you an even more delicious Christmas tipple!

What kind of bourbon and rum should I use?

Any kind, although I would steer clear of cheap bourbon and rum.
I’d recommend bourbons like Wild Turkey, Bulleit, Knob Creek or Maker’s Mark, all of which are completely affordable.

When it comes to good rum, first of all make sure you use a dark rum for this recipe. You can’t go wrong with a nice spiced rum, something like Appleton, Havana Club or Kraken.

What can you do with leftover eggnog?

Why not turn it into ice cubes! It’s a quick and easy way to store your leftover eggnog.

Eggnog recipes you’ll love

These eggnog recipes are simply sensational:

Description

A warming traditional winter time drink. This eggnog is easy to make and will get you in the Christmas spirit.

Ingredients

Units
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 100g (½ cup) golden caster sugar
  • 500ml (2 cups) milk
  • 250ml (1 cup) cream
  • 1 lemon, zest only
  • 10 ml (2 tsp) vanilla paste
  • 125ml (½ cup) rum
  • 30ml (2 tbsp) bourbon
  • 25g (⅛ cup) caster sugar

Instructions

  1. Place 4 egg yolks in a large mixing bowl along with the golden caster sugar. Whisk until light yellow ribbons are formed and it has doubled in size.
  2. Place the milk, cream, lemon zest and the vanilla paste in a large saucepan and heat over a low heat until just before a simmering point is reached.
  3. Temper the hot milk into the sugar yolk mixture, by slowly adding hot milk about 60ml (¼ cup) at a time, whisking to distribute heat. Once all the milk has been added, transfer mixture back into the saucepan.
  4. Pour in the rum and the bourbon, allowing it to thicken into a runny custard texture while stirring constantly.
  5. Once achieved, pour into a jar (preferably a mason jar) and set aside to cool and then place in the fridge for two weeks.
  6. Place your egg whites into an airtight container and place in the freezer.
  7. After two weeks, defrost the egg whites.
  8. Place the egg whites in a clean mixing bowl and whisk until you achieve soft peaks. While whisking slowly add the caster sugar until fully incorporated.
  9. Add the custard mixture to the egg whites and fold it through.
  10. Serve in glasses of your choice. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use any alcohol you wish. I like the combination of rum and bourbon but you can use just one type of alcohol of the same amount if you so prefer.
  • We also have a recipe on here for vegan eggnog which is great and means you don’t have to exclude your vegan friends and family.
  • I used golden caster sugar but feel free to substitute with the sugar of your choice.

Imagine this! You come home from work, sit back and put your feet up with a glass of Don Pedro.

Two glasses of cream don pedro drinks with a bottle of amarula

Traditionally, Don Pedro is a dessert beverage made with vanilla ice cream, double cream and whisky. Only, this time I jazzed up my favourite South African dessert beverage with a generous drizzle of Amarula liqueur.

A Don Pedro is an adult-only beverage, which is perfect if you like throwing adult only dinner parties and like to show off your cocktail-making prowess.

The best part is that you can alter the portions of the ingredients and make the beverage as strong as you want. This homemade cocktail is best served immediately topped with grated chocolate, cocoa powder or a stick of chocolate.

If you are serving the Don Pedro drink on a particularly hot day, include some ice cubes.

What's best you can also experiment with other types of alcohol to make it a stronger cocktail. These include coffee liqueur, kahlua, and brandy.

Keep in mind though, Amarula liqueur is your best option, as it is one of Africa's hidden treasures and most awarded alcohol brands!

Don Pedro - a South African cocktail

Don Pedro is one of South Africa's most popular cocktails. You can practically find it on almost every single restaurant menu in the country.

The Afrikaans community also refers to it as Dom Pedro, the running joke being that if you drink too many of these babies, you turn into a Dumb Pedro. I.e. "dom" in Afrikaans means "dumb" in English. At your first sip, you'll understand why it will be difficult to have just one cocktail.

In fact, the Don Pedro drink is very similar to the typical Irish coffee beverage, just minus the coffee element, although I am pretty sure it would also work well in this Don Pedro recipe. Just think of a Don Pedro cocktail as a milkshake for adults.

The addition of smooth Amarula liqueur lights up the Don Pedro and lends it a fruity undertone.  To complete any meal, you can served it with other South African desserts like peppermint crisp tart or these chocolate and coconut clusters.

Ingredients to make a don pedro drink

How is Amarula made?

Actually, it's very similar to the wine-making process. The spirit is distilled and aged for roughly two years in French oak barrels. The French oak gives it that lovely velvety texture and vanilla flavour.

Since Amarula liqueur is so tasty and versatile, I've used it in many desserts too. For instance,  I've used Amarula liqueur in this amazing Amarula cheesecake recipe. Also, I made this incredible malva pudding. It can even be used in savoury recipes!

Don't you just love how versatile Amarula is? It is no surprise that it received the 2018 Brand of the Year Award and many others. It is Africa's most awarded cream liqueur!

don pedro's history

The Don Pedro dessert beverage first popped up on the South African scene during the 1970s. Nobody really understands how Don Pedro came about and how it became so popular. However, some claim that they have found the origins of this South African drink.

Apparently, chef Danny Ferris of the Belinzona restaurant based in Blouberg created it. The Don Pedro came to existence when Danny travelled on a holiday to Scotland.

When he visited a whisky distillery for whisky tastings, one of the owners poured whisky directly over some ice cream. As soon as the ice cream began to melt, the whisky started to infuse with the cream.

Thus, the Don Pedro was born! Since then, he began serving it in his restaurant and it gained popularity like wild fire, and with good reason!

Do you think that this is the true origin of the Don Pedro? Let me know.

It's not the first time that liqueurs and cream were combined. In fact, back in the 18th and 19th century, coffee as well as rum were topped with whipped cream in Vienna.

If you sat in one of those Viennese coffee houses, your alcoholic beverage would be served in a see-through glass with a spoon and whipped cream.

One glass of dom pedro

don pedro's alcohol content

Amarula contains 17% alcohol. As you can imagine, with Don Pedro traditionally being whisky based, is quite high in alcohol. That's why you can easily substitute the whisky with Amarula liqueur which is slightly lower in terms of alcohol content.

However, if you really enjoy a stronger Don Pedro, play around with the ratios. For instance, since the Amarula liqueur is already creamy, you don't need to add so much heavy cream. So, don't be afraid to add more of this delicious liqueur.

In addition, you can always add more alcohol. For instance, add a pinch of whisky to cut through the creamy textures. You can also add these sorts of alcohol and beverages:

  • coffee liqueur - make it reminiscent of the Irish coffee or just add a shot of espresso
  • brandy - if whisky is too smoky and intense for you
  • chocolate liqueur - if you wish to max out on the chocolatey flavour

Also, you can use these additional beverages for consistency control.  If you find your Don Pedro too thick, you also have two options without having to top up with even more alcohol.

Firstly, wait for the ice cream to melt a bit, which I prefer, or add more milk or cream to make it a thinner consistency.

A complete don pedro recipe, one bottle of Amarula, and two don pedro drinks

South African cocktails

Now, as Amarula is the star of this Don Pedro recipe, you can also make other delicious South African cocktail recipes with it. For example:

  • Amarula Brandy Alexander - it is basically brandy, Amarula and heavy cream
  • Amarula Martini - combine gin, lemon zest, Amarula and add ice cubes
  • Spiced Amarula Cocktail - cinnamon whisky, Amarula and topped with pumpkin spice
  • Amarula & Eve Cocktail - with grapefruit, citrus vodka, lychee juice and Amarula

Why not add some Amarula to boiled custard? These are just a few cocktail recipes you can make with the delicious Amarula.

If you like creamy shots, check out Alien Brain Hemorrhage. For a super green cocktail recipe, check out the Incredible Hulk Drink. Or make this old classic, Amaretto and Coke.

Have you ever tried Amarula liqueur? Would you drink it alone or would you combine it with other ingredients?

Equipment you'll need for this recipe

Before you start making this Biscoff milkshake recipe, there are a few key items you'll need:

  • Blender or food processor – the all-important kitchen utensil that will bring your magnificent milkshake to life. If you're a big fan of milkshakes and make them regularly, don't skimp on quality and invest in a really good blender or food processor.
  • Measuring jug – still using that old faded measuring jug? It's time to invest in something where you can actually see the measurements. A measuring jug is key, as precision will result in a milkshake with the perfect velvety thickness.
  • Milkshake glasses – serve your milkshake up in style with some swanky milkshake glasses
  • Ice cream scoop – a simple, classic, easy to use ice cream scoop is needed for the vanilla ice cream in this recipe
  • Reusable straws – be sustainable and get some reusable straws rather than single-use straws for your delicious milkshake

Ingredients needed for this recipe

add ice cream to jug.

Add vanilla ice cream.

Add Biscoff spread and crumbled biscuits. Blend. Enjoy!

add crumbled speculoos.

Variations to this recipe

Make it vegan

Lotus Biscoff spread and Biscoff biscuits are both vegan, so all you need to make this a vegan Biscoff milkshake, use vegan vanilla ice cream or any kind of dairy free ice cream and any kind of dairy free milk. I recommend using almond milk or soy milk, as the flavor will pair will with Biscoff.

You can also use vegan whipped cream as a topping for your vegan milkshake.

Popular substitutions for this recipe

Can't find Biscoff? Any kind of cookie butter will work as an alternative.

For a chocolatey milkshake try this Twix Milkshake.

Top Tips

Making a milkshake is easy. Making the perfect milkshake? That's a whole different matter.

Balance is absolutely crucial! The measurements below are designed for the precise ratio of milk, ice cream and Biscoff spread/biscuits. Don't be tempted to wing it with the measurement – use a measuring jug.

glass of biscoff milkshake with marshmallows.

Can I add ice cubes to this Biscoff milkshake recipe?

I recommend leaving ice cubes for use in smoothies. You don't want to dilute the rich creamy deliciousness of milkshakes. The coolness of the ice cream and the milk is enough to bring that refreshing cool temperature.

What kind of ice cream should I use for a Biscoff milkshake?

Avoid going too sweet and go for a simple vanilla ice cream. Go for a good quality ice cream – you don't need to break the bank, but really cheap vanilla ice cream will result in a poor quality milkshake.

For extra Biscoff flavour, you can make your own Biscoff ice cream to use instead of vanilla.

Can I make this milkshake ahead of time?

Absolutely! It's extremely easy to make this recipe in advance and serve it up when you're ready. It will stay fresh for a few days, so you can make it days in advance.

How do you store Biscoff milkshakes?

This Biscoff cookie butter milkshake should be stored in the fridge in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for about four days.

Why is my milkshake too thin?

Most likely because the ratios are off. Make sure you follow the exact guidelines and you should have the perfect creamy milkshake.

If your milkshake seems to be too thin, you can add more ice cream to thicken the mixture.

I’m a purist when it comes to carrot juice. My pet peeve is when restaurants and juice bars cheat by watering it down with water or ice, or even with other ingredients. Just give me 100% carrot juice!

How can I make carrot juice?

When learning how to make carrot juice, you'll see it's all about selecting the right type of carrots. That said, carrot combines well with other ingredients such as ginger, apple and orange, so you can experiment to find out your favourite combination.

It's really not complicated. If you want to know how to make carrot juice properly, you'll need a high quality juicer! At this stage, I haven't found a better juicer than the Sage The Nutri Juicer Cold XI. It takes juicing to a whole other level!

Sage's Nutri Juicer Cold XI

In essence, this machine has a larger feed chute of 88mm, a 2 litre XL juicing jug and is up to five times faster at extracting two litres of juice than a cold press juicer. In other words, it's a state-of-the-art juicer!

The 2 litre seal and store jug enabled me to make large amounts of the juice and store it in the fridge for the following day.

The 88mm chute is more than big enough to put whole carrots inside the juicer, without the need to cut them up as I have done in the past with other juicers. This saved me precious time in the kitchen!

Oh, and don't forget the amount of noise the average juicer makes. The Sage The Nutri Juicer Cold XI is has a quiet setting where it can make up to 40% less noise!

The juicer is made with premium materials, such as a stainless-steel juicing basket, titanium reinforced cutting disk and an Italian micro mesh filter.

Other features that you will find useful:

  • it comes with a juice nozzle for single servings
  • dishwasher safe, however, it also comes with a cleaning brush
  • has a 2 year Sage guarantee and a 5 year motor guarantee
  • 1500W Power
  • has clever Cold Spin Technology

Lastly, the juicer has three juicing setting depending on how soft and hard the ingredients are.

I receive a lot of kitchen gadgets to test, but this one is a firm favourite and has a permanent space on my kitchen surface!

The best carrots for carrot juice

First and foremost, the best type of carrots to make carrot juice are organic ones. When making juices, you should always make sure that your carrots don't contain any traces of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Otherwise, you would be doing damage to your body in the long run.

In short, the carrot is a humble and delicious root vegetable. There are many types of carrots: white carrots, purple carrots, red carrots, yellow carrots and orange carrots. They also vary greatly in size.

However, the carrots you should be looking for to make your juice are those which are sweet and full of flavour.

Hence, look for these specific varieties:

  • Bolero - have a lot of juice and are sweet
  • Little Finger - super sweet
  • Scarlet Nantes - sweet and coreless
  • Short 'n Sweet - very juicy, sweet and bright orange
  • St. Valery - sweet and nearly coreless

My recommendation is that the best carrots for juicing are the Bolero variety and the Scarlet Nantes variety.

If you’ve got any leftover carrots, you can use them in other healthy carrot recipes. For instance, try these roasted carrots or these cumin roast carrots. Otherwise, you can also try the following:

Do you have to peel carrots for juicing?

In short, if the carrots are not sourced organically the answer is absolutely. I peel my carrots because there might be a presence of pesticides and other harmful chemicals that I may not even know about.

I know carrot peel contains plenty of nutrition but I also peel my carrots even if they are organic. Just in case!

how to clean carrots

It's fairly easy. Wash the carrots first under water and wash away any obvious dirt. Next, top and tail the carrots.

Lastly, use a vegetable peeler to remove their skins. Rinse the carrots with water one more time and set them aside. They are ready to be juiced!

How do you make carrot juice taste better?

There are plenty of ways for you to jazz up this juice recipe. Carrots pair with almost any type of fruit or vegetable.

The most common combination one sees as the juice stall are the following:

  • carrot, orange and apple juice (3 carrots, 1.5 oranges, 2 apples)
  • carrot and orange juice (4 carrots, 1.5 oranges)
  • apple and carrot juice (2.5 apples and 4 carrots)
  • ginger carrot apple juice (4 carrots, 2 apples, 2.5cm/1 inch ginger)

Check out some more fruity and sweeter combinations you may fall in love with:

  • carrot and watermelon juice (4 carrots, 250ml/1 cup of watermelon)
  • carrot beet apple juice (4 carrots, 2 beets, 2 apples, 30ml/2 tablespoon of lemon juice)
  • banana carrot orange juice (half of a banana, 3 carrots, 1.5 oranges)

If you wish to drink the juice for its health benefits and enjoy bold flavours in particular, then check out these combinations:

  • carrot beetroot spinach juice (4 carrots, 2 beets, handful of spinach)
  • greens detox carrot juice (4 carrots, 2 stalks of kale, half a cucumber, 30ml/2 tablespoon of lemon juice, handful of spinach)
  • carrot turmeric juice (5 carrots, 1 tiny turmeric root or 10ml/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric, half a lime)

If you love fruit juices, you can also try kiwi juice or my strawberry orange juice recipe.

Otherwise, you can also try my fantastic healthy smoothies, check these out:

It is okay to drink carrot juice every day?

Oh, yes! As long as you know how to make carrot juice properly, then it is absolutely safe. That being said, there are two things that you should make sure of.

First, only prepare your juice from organic carrots. At best, use those from your own garden. Nothing tastes better than fresh carrots.

As a rule of thumb, all organic root vegetables taste better than their non-organic counterparts. So buy the former whenever you can!

Secondly, it is okay to drink carrot juice every day as long as you drink it in moderation. Since carrots are an excellent source of beta-carotene, it could cause skin colouration after after drinking excessive amounts.

There you have it - happy juicing!

Why frozen food helps with food waste

There's so much food waste in the UK! WRAP research shows that throw away a staggering 6.6 million tonnes of household food waste a year. Furthermore, almost three quarters (70% of the total) of this is food we could have eaten.

This all amounts to a loss of around £60 per month for the average family with children. The carbon footprint of this food waste is equivalent to that generated by one in five cars on UK roads.

So, by reducing food waste, we're not only benefiting our own pockets, but also helping to save the planet.

A big reason for so much food waste is because the food hasn't been eaten in time. That's why, in order to reduce food waste, we should start to think frozen.

Many foods are just as good when prepared from frozen as they are when prepared fresh. Especially fruit. Which makes recipes like this raspberry smoothie recipe perfect for helping you to reduce food waste.

In fact, this recipe is best when using frozen raspberries, as the texture of the smoothie is thicker and more delicious. So, you get a better smoothie and you get to reduce food waste at the same time!

Check out the website freshfromthefreezer.co.uk for more information on how to think frozen, reduce food waste and help save the planet... one recipe at a time!

Popular substitutions for this recipe

You can substitute the white chocolate for milk chocolate or dark chocolate if you prefer a richer chocolate flavor

Variations for this recipe

Add extra fruit

If you want to bring the fruitiness of this raspberry smoothie to a whole new level, there are a few different fruits you can add to the recipe:

  • Blueberry is a complementary cousin of raspberry and works very well in this recipe
  • Banana takes the sweetness up a notch or two, while perfectly complementing the chocolate flavor and bringing a beautiful creamy texture. Trust me... a raspberry banana smoothie with chocolate is utterly divine!

For a fruity smoothie check out this Mango Pineapple Smoothie.

Go vegan

If you’re vegan, don’t worry… adapting this raspberry smoothie recipe is easy! Simply replace ½ cup of milk with ½ cup of almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk or oat milk. Then add a frozen banana in place of the yogurt, to bring the creaminess. If you find the texture is not to your liking, simply add a touch more almond milk or a little more banana, until you’ve got the right balance.

You can also add cashew butter, almond butter or macadamia nut butter for a thicker, creamier texture.

Go extra decadent

Fancy turning this simple raspberry smoothie into an all-out decadent dessert? Here’s how:

  • Add a scoop or two of your favorite ice cream in place of the yogurt
  • Add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey to sweeten the deal!

Spice things up

This recipe is simple and delicious as it is. However, there’s plenty of room to get creative!

If you like a bit of heat, add some fresh chopped chili into the mix. Be careful! You don’t want to overpower the smoothie. Just half a teaspoon will do – add a couple of seeds if you like it extra hot.

Ginger is another spice that would work well with chocolate and raspberry. Add half a teaspoon of ground ginger before blending up your smoothie.

You could also add mint for an interesting fragrance and taste, as it works well with both chocolate and raspberry.

Go healthy

Add a small amount of spinach or kale to your raspberry smoothie. You won’t notice any change in flavor and it’ll add extra nutrients to your smoothie. You could also add hemp, flax or chia seeds into the mix.

Top Tip

If you don’t have a microwave, you can place a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water. Just add the chocolate and milk to the bowl and stir until everything is melted and the mixture is smooth. Then remove from the heat and let it cool.

smoothie with white chocolate shavings and raspberries on top.

Can you put frozen raspberries in a blender?

Absolutely! A good blender should be able to handle frozen fruit. Go with my recommended blender (see 'equipment needed for this recipe' above) and you'll have no problems.

Are smoothies better with or without yogurt?

They’re definitely better with yogurt – for reasons of taste and texture. However, you can always substitute milk (regular, almond, oat or coconut) for yogurt. You can also add frozen banana, which brings a similar creaminess to smoothies.

What kind of yogurt should I use?

For me, the best way to make a raspberry smoothie is to use plain Greek yogurt. Its creamy and neutral taste is perfect for making a delicious raspberry smoothie.
If you want a healthy raspberry smoothie, low fat Greek yogurt is the way to go.

Can you use just water in a smoothie?

You can, although you'll water down that delicious taste. Adding a touch of water is a good idea if your smoothie is too thick, although if you follow the recipe below you'll end up with the perfect texture.

Do raspberries have seeds in smoothies?

Not if you use a good blender. If you do find that your raspberry smoothie still has seeds, you can pass it through a fine mesh sieve to remove the seeds.

Can I use fresh raspberries instead of frozen raspberries?

Yes, you can replace frozen raspberries with fresh raspberries. However, if using fresh berries, I recommend adding a few ice cubes. This will make your smoothie nice and cool and will thicken up the mixture – which is essential, as fresh raspberries contain more moisture than frozen raspberries.

How do you store White Chocolate and Raspberry Smoothie?

It’s always best to drink a smoothie straight away! However, if you make too much, or intend on making a big batch, the best way to store your white chocolate and raspberry smoothie is to pour it into a mason jar or another sealable airtight container. Then, store it in the fridge.

How long does it last?

Your refrigerated chocolate and raspberry smoothie will keep for a day or two, before losing its wonderful taste and texture.

Where can I buy frozen raspberries?

Frozen raspberries can be found in supermarkets year round. They are cheaper at times of year when raspberries have to be imported from southern Europe. Personally, I've bought them from Aldi and Asda.

In the summertime, there is nothing more refreshing than a fruit smoothie, which is why I love this strawberry blackberry banana smoothie. It gives me my daily intake of fruit all in one go and tastes absolutely amazing.

Strawberry Blackberry Banana Smoothie in a glass with a green paper straw and fruit around the glass.

It’s fruity and sweet and it’s so easy to whip up in a matter of minutes. You’ll love the smoothie recipe!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

You’ll love this recipe for many reasons, but mostly because it’s quick, has a delicious creamy texture, and can be customized to suit your flavor preferences.

Special Equipment Needed To Make This Recipe

You will need some sort of a blender to make this recipe. Whether you use a standard blender or an immersion blender and a small blending cup, you’ll need something to mix up the ingredients.

You could even use a food processor if that's all you have.

Special Ingredients You Need For This Recipe

You’ll need a couple special ingredients for this recipe:

Dates - Dates are not always the easiest item to find, but if you can find them at a farmers' market or your local grocery store, snag them up.

Dairy-free Yogurt - You can use coconut yogurt, soy yogurt, or any other dairy-free yogurt you like. They can sometimes be hard to find at local supermarkets, but larger chains should have them in stock.

ingredients for Strawberry Blackberry Banana Smoothie.

Top Tip

If your blender is a little older, don't use all frozen ingredients. Substitute frozen strawberries and frozen bananas for fresh ones and just use ice cubes, or use frozen fruits and skip the ice cubes. Some blenders cannot handle too many frozen items.

What to Serve with Your Strawberry Blackberry Banana Smoothie

Sides

  • Gooseberry Jam - To turn your blackberry smoothie into a proper snack, have some toast with gooseberry jam. It's a lovely sweet combination that'll curb your afternoon hunger pains.
  • Papaya Chutney - If you'd rather a chutney over a jam, try this papaya one. Its tropical flavor is to die for.

Desserts

  • Chocolate Orange Brownies - I love a fruity twist on a chocolate dessert, especially with this smoothie.
  • Marrow Cake - If you haven't tried eating cake with a banana smoothie yet, what are you waiting for? It's an unexpected combination, but one you'll love.

Drinks

  • Cranberry Smoothie - Keep an extra frozen banana on hand for a cranberry smoothie. You can make a delicious smoothie bar with this recipe.
  • Super Green Smoothie - You won't need a frozen banana for this, but you may want to add some chia seeds for the ultimate healthy smoothie.
bananas and dates in a blender.

Popular Substitutions For This Recipe

Frozen fruit

If you do not have frozen strawberries, a frozen banana, or frozen blackberries, feel free to use fresh fruit instead. You can also use fresh and frozen fruit if you have a combination.

If you do you use fresh fruit instead, or you’re worried that just using fresh and frozen fruit won’t give you the consistency you like, you can toss in a couple ice cubes. This will make up for the loss of texture.

Almond milk

You can use any milk you’d like for this recipe. It doesn’t have to be plant-based milk or oat milk. You can use cow's milk or soy milk, too.

Yogurt

If you do not like Greek yogurt, feel free to use another type like almond yogurt or vegan yogurt.

You can also forgo the yogurt altogether and add more milk like coconut milk. Or you can use something else to get a creamy texture, such as almond butter.

Dates

The dates in this recipe mostly serve as a sweetener so if you do not like them you can use maple syrup or honey instead. You can also omit them altogether.

Variations To This Recipe

As noted, one of the reasons I love this recipe so much is because you can edit it to fit your flavor profile. If you do not want a strawberry blackberry banana smoothie, you can change up the ingredients a bit to make it more your style:

Different fruit combinations

You can always switch up the fruit that you use. You can use any frozen berries you like and have just a berry smoothie. Check out this Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie.

You could also make it into just a banana smoothie or a blackberry smoothie. You can use mixed berries, raspberries, or blueberries. You truly can do whatever you want in smoothie recipes.

Vegetables

If you want to get your daily vegetable intake, feel free to add your favorites. Or add what you feel you are lacking but don’t eat because you don’t like the taste.

The smoothie recipe will still taste great even if you add vegetables because it’ll mask the flavor. Leafy greens like spinach are super easy to add in, as are celery sticks and tomatoes.

Other additives

Smoothies are also great ways to get the other vitamins and minerals that you are missing. You can put in anything else that you’d like, such as protein powder, nut butter, collagen peptides, chia seeds, or even granola.

All of these will still give you a great-tasting strawberry blackberry banana smoothie, but you’ll get some extra protein and other benefits, as well.

Top Tip

If you don’t like the consistency of your smoothie, adjust with the liquid first. Always start with less than it calls for in case you want a thicker smoothie, especially if you are using fresh fruits instead of frozen. You can then adjust accordingly.

Strawberry Blackberry Banana Smoothie in a glass with a green paper straw.

How do I store leftovers?

If you have any leftovers, just pop them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. A mason jar is a wonderful container to use to drink out of and store your smoothie.

How Long Will This Food Last In the Fridge?

The smoothie will last a couple of days in the fridge without going bad. You may notice it start to separate a bit, but that is not a huge deal. Just stir it and it will be fine.

Can I Freeze This Recipe?

Yes, you can definitely freeze your strawberry blackberry banana smoothie. This will keep it for a while longer, but do you know that it may affect the texture a bit if you use certain liquids like milk.

Can this recipe be scaled?

Yes, this recipe can be scaled. If you have a large blender that allows you to make large amounts of smoothie at once, you can double or even triple the recipe to your liking. Alternatively, you can also make this into a smaller serving by cutting back on the amounts of ingredients you put in.

Smoothies are some of the easiest recipes to make because it’s all about your taste and consistency preferences, and the same thing goes for scaling the recipe. You can make as much or as little as you like, as long as it suits your palate.

Can This Recipe be made in advance?

Yes, this recipe can be made in advance. You can make it at night and eat it in the morning. Or you can make some for the week and grab them from the fridge when you are hungry.

You can also gather the ingredients and store them in a cup or your blender and wait until you are ready to eat it to mix it up.

Description

This tasty summer Strawberry Blackberry Banana Smoothie is fruity and sweet and is quick and easy to make.

Ingredients

Units
  • 125g (1 cup) frozen strawberries
  • 125g (1 cup) frozen blackberries
  • 125g (1 cup) frozen banana
  • 250ml (1 cup) almond milk
  • 250ml (1 cup) plain dairy-free yogurt
  • 2 dates, pitted

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in the blender.
  2. Blitz until smooth.
  3. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • The cup measurements for the frozen fruit were guestimated. Your best bet is to place the blender on a scale, reset to 0 and add the fruit. That said, smoothies are very forgiving things to make. The most important thing to remember is to keep the ratios of fruit the same and simply adjust the liquids according to desired consistency.
  • Not all fruit needs to be in a frozen state in order to be used in this recipe. It will be just fine if you just used one frozen fruit and 2 fresh ones.
  • As mentioned in Almond Milk Protein Shake (https://www.greedygourmet.com/recipes-for-diets/gluten-free/chocolate-banana-protein-shake/), I have a permanent stash of frozen bananas in the fridge for when a smoothie craving hits. Pro Tip: let the bananas become overripe before peeling and chopping them up. Much sweeter!
  • If you’re not vegan, substitute the almond milk and dairy free yogurt with the cow versions.
  • Not a fan of yogurt, add more milk instead.
  • 15ml (1 tbsp) of maple syrup can be used instead of dates. Add more or omit altogether; do whatever you like!
  • If you’d like to have a bit of protein in the smoothie, let 15g (1 tbsp) of chia seeds soak in the milk first before proceeding to blend everything together. A scoop of collagen or two will work too!

Make your own gin and ginger beer cocktail and treat yourself to a delicious mixed beverage! Ultimately, one of these will cost you (without a shadow of a doubt) roughly 12 to 15 quid if you enjoy one of them in a restaurant.

Two glasses of a gin cocktail

Spare yourself the extra expense and make the cocktail for a mere fraction of the price. Plus, it'll give you a good excuse to purchase a good bottle of gin which you can reuse for other delicious cocktails like the famous gin and tonic.

Allow yourself to put your feet up after work and sip away! Besides, making this gin and ginger beer cocktail recipe is really a piece of cake.

gin and ginger beer cocktail

Ultimately, this gin and ginger beer cocktail is a mixture of Gordon's gin, lemon juice, ginger beer and caster sugar. Naturally, it is beautifully decorated with lime slices and mint leaves for garnish.

At the risk of sounding like a complete skinflint, I’d like to moan and groan about cocktail prices in restaurants, bars and night clubs. Am I the only one who thinks they are hideously overpriced?!

The cheapest cocktail I’ve come across was £4, which was served in a teeny-weeny glass. More typically, though, they're liable to set you back a ludicrous £15 at an upmarket restaurant.

By making this gin and ginger beer cocktail, I am about to prove a point. You don't have to spend millions on overpriced cocktails in the city centre. Just make this simple gin and ginger beer cocktail recipe and you'll see what I'm talking about.

easy gin and ginger beer cocktail

Just as an example, I will tally up the cost of this drink.

  • 30p a lemon. ½ a lemon = 15p
  • sugar = 5p
  • £1 for 1.5 litres of ginger beer. 250ml = 17p
  • 70cl bottle of Gordon’s for £13. 30ml = 56p
  • Total = 93p

So what exactly are we paying for when we order the same gin and ginger beer cocktail in a restaurant? The experience, the dishwasher, music and let’s not forget the all-important bartender.

He’d better be Robert Pattinson-cute, and showing off his biceps in a tight shirt if we are to pay the restaurant some 300-1000% in profits. These establishments are notorious for committing daylight robbery in the alcohol drinks department. It’s a wonder the public hasn’t spoken up yet!

If I still haven’t convinced you to prepare your own cocktail, at least order it without ice to get the most bang for your buck. For the converts, get creative with your cocktails and enjoy yourself at home, it’s dangerous to drink and drive anyway.

gin and ginger beer or ale

Obviously, this recipe calls for the use of ginger beer. However, you can also use the not-so-distant cousin of ginger beer, which is ginger ale. In comparison to ginger beer, ginger ale is slightly less spicy.

Needless to say, that both the ginger beer and ginger ale are non-alcoholic beverages, so you can easily switch between the two.

I'd say that the main difference between ginger beer and ginger ale is that ginger beer is more robust because it undergoes fermentation during the (non-alcoholic) brewing process. Whereas, ginger ale is simply ginger-flavoured carbonated water.

So, for a more robust cocktail, make the gin and ginger beer version.

My favourite type of ginger beer to drink – either on its own or in this gin and ginger beer cocktail – is Old Jamaica Ginger Beer! It never disappoints.

gin cocktail with a lime in it

gin and fresh ginger cocktail

First of all, you can enhance the flavour of the cocktail by grating fresh ginger into it. The best method, of course, would be to juice raw ginger and pour the juice into the cocktail.

Careful though, as raw ginger has a very spicy and peppery flavour as well as taste. You'll need to watch out for the portion control as too much raw ginger juice might overpower your gin and ginger beer cocktail.

Next, you can also consider leaving out the ginger beer element and make ginger soda yourself. All you'll need to do is add carbonated water into the juice of raw ginger and you're all set.

My advice is, that if you follow this method, you might need to add a slightly higher amount of sugar. Otherwise, your gin and fresh ginger cocktail will be too sharp and bitter.

ginger beer cocktails

Other variations of gin and ginger beer cocktails you should try include adding a pinch of elderflower liqueur. The best option would be to add a spoonful of the famous liqueur Saint Germain. It's an excellent way to incorporate the subtle flavours of elderflower.

Otherwise, for a more fresh and cooling taste, you can also add fresh slices of cucumber, as is sometimes done in a gin and tonic. The cucumber will act as a refreshing element and will work well with the mint and lime juice.

cocktail with ice or no ice

If you wish to turn this gin and ginger beer cocktail into a long drink, then I recommend adding ice cubes or crushed ice as done in mojitos. If you leave out the ice, then make sure that your alcohol and the ginger beer is extra cold. Plus, your drink will be stronger.

Aerial view of two gin cocktails

serving the gin and ginger beer cocktail

It doesn't matter what glass you choose to serve this cocktail in. If you will be serving ice, then you should opt for a longer glass that holds more volume. Otherwise, you can make this a short drink, too.

Decorate with slices of citrus fruits. Garnish with mint. You can also decorate with exotic fruits like pineapple or strawberries. In the end, you can also add a little straw umbrella to fit the occasion.

Just don't use a plastic straw due to the obvious problems with plastic. Use one of these plastic straw alternatives and stay environmentally friendly.

other cocktails that might interest you

Other festive drinks you might want to serve include the long beach iced tea, which is based on cranberry juice. Be aware, it's really strong.

Otherwise, go for a lighter beverage such as a buck's fizz (half champagne and half orange juice). The Incredible Hulk Drink is alluringly green and potent though!
