Siam Park is a place where memories are made. Often called one of the best water parks in the world, it invites you to leave your worries — and your phone — behind. For one glorious day, you simply live in the moment.

Siam Park board with Michelle Minnaar

I recently revisited after years away, but this time was different. I brought my teenage son along for his first-ever water park experience. My son is autistic, and while he wasn’t keen on the idea at first, little did we know it would become a day we’d never forget.

Ticket entrance gates at Siam Park.
Locker rooms at Siam Park.
Seals swimming in pool at Siam Park.

We started gently, easing into things with the Mai Thai River, the park’s iconic lazy river. At first, he wasn’t impressed. “Why would I want my bum to get cold and wet?” he grumbled, arms crossed, clearly unimpressed by the idea of floating in chilly water.

Mai Thai River ride at Siam Park. People floating on yellow tubes in the water.

Then, the magic happened. Bubbles fizzed up around us, and waterfalls cascaded over our heads. Slowly but surely, his resistance melted away. His face lit up as the quiet flow of the river transformed into an exciting journey through tunnels and bubbling rapids. It was the perfect introduction to the park.

Siam Beach at Siam Park. People walking in shallow water while people sit in the distance.

Next, we headed to Siam Beach, a man-made paradise with fine, soft sand. He had never experienced an artificial wave pool before, and as the anticipation built, his excitement was undeniable. When the waves finally came crashing in, his joy was electric.

Lots of people in Siam Beach swimming in the deep end.
Life guard at Siam Beach giving thumbs up and keeping people safe.

He quickly made his way to the front, where the adrenaline junkies gathered to catch the biggest waves. I stayed further back, letting the water gently lap at my legs. Watching him dive headfirst into the experience was a moment of pure happiness for both of us.

People watching others take a fast water slide down.

By then, he was ready for more thrills. Together, we tackled the Mekong Rapids and Patong Rapids. These group slides had us twisting, turning, and laughing all the way down. My son, who often hesitates with new experiences, was now sprinting up the stairs for another go — his determination and enthusiasm were contagious.

Four people riding separately on floats down a steep slope and making big splashes.

What struck me most was how inclusive Siam Park is. For families with younger children, there’s the Lost City, a vibrant play area with mini slides, water fountains, and splash zones. No one is left out here—there’s truly something for every age and ability.

Small Lost City construction ideal for small people to play in while parents watch them.

For thrill-seekers, the Tower of Power is a must-try. It’s a vertical 28-meter drop that takes you through a tank filled with sharks — a heart-stopping experience for the boldest visitors. Other rides like the DragonKinnaree, and Singhaoffer their own unique twists for those chasing an adrenaline rush.

Tower of Power is a sharp drop into a pool of water. People are looking on.

The park itself feels like a tropical oasis. Lush greenery surrounds you, and many of the rides are hidden among the foliage, adding a sense of adventure as you explore. Every corner feels like a new discovery waiting to happen.

Floating Market is the shopping area of Siam Park where people can buy snacks and souvenirs. Idyllic setting with a Thai vibe.

Although we didn’t stop for food this time, there are plenty of options for all tastes. From quick bites to sit-down meals, you’ll find fresh and satisfying options scattered throughout the park.

Blue water shoes hanging on shop door.

What really stood out to me was the thoughtfulness of the staff. Lifeguards were everywhere, ensuring everyone’s safety and creating a relaxed atmosphere. Their presence gave me the confidence to let my son explore, knowing he was in good hands.

Sweet Siam is a restaurant in Siam Park selling all kinds of sweet goods. People are sitting underneath parasols at tables eating and resting.

By the end of the day, he didn’t want to leave. He had gone from hesitant and skeptical to a full-blown water park enthusiast. Watching him embrace the thrills and magic of Siam Park was worth every stair climbed and every ride braved.

A massive queue of people holding yellow tubes while waiting for their rides in a lush green setting and pure blue skies.

Siam Park is more than just a water park. It’s a place where families reconnect, where fears are overcome, and where joy is contagious. If you’re looking for a day filled with laughter, adventure, and memories that last a lifetime, Siam Park delivers.

Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel is a luxury adult-only hotel located in Playa del Ingles, on the island of Gran Canaria, making this hotel perfect for a getaway vacation. You can absorb the tranquil environment, stay in a beautiful boutique suite and enjoy the stunning ocean views.

The exterior of the hotel

Check out Bohemia Suites and Spa's many pools, visit the Siam Spa and generally indulge yourself in the luxury that you deserve! In addition, Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel also include a high-end dining experience at the 360° Restaurant which is reputed for having one of the best cuisines on the island. Consequently, if you're a foodie and want to explore the island's fresh produce – this is the place!

Bohemia Suites & Spa Hotel, Gran Canaria

In my review of the Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel, I will highlight all the amazing things I've encountered during my stay here. By the end of the article, I'm sure you'll be booking your next vacation at this hotel. Make sure you check out Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel whenever you visit the Canary Islands. By the way, the hotel promotes various special offers to residents.

I love my kids. I really do. Yet sometimes I need a break. Not just from them but everything – you know – the daily slog. Morning school runs, a never-ending stream of laundry, cooking, dirty dishes, helping with homework, and dealing with the constant onslaught of school letters and requests, the list goes on and on. “Mummy, I want…” “Mummy, when are we…?” or “Mummy, please help with…”

Now that’s just on the children and housekeeping front. Running a business is a totally different kettle of fish, with its own demands and deadlines that need fulfilling. There are days, come 9 pm, after the kids are happy in bed, that I’ve turned into a zombie. At those times even the prospect of relaxing watching TV loses its appeal.

So this year I decided to take myself away to recharge. If you can relate to the aforementioned, I know just the place for you - Bohemia Suites and Spa.

To save yourself from reading a massive article, you can watch a short film about Bohemia Suites & Spa which captures the spirit of the hotel beautifully. See below!

Bohemia Suites & Spa, Playa del Ingles

This hotel is situated in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria. What sets Bohemia apart from the rest is that instead of catering for quantity, it focuses on quality. Case in point, nearby hotels possess as many as 1000 rooms.

In stark contrast, Bohemia only has 67 rooms, having a maximum capacity of 134 people. Yes, this hotel is completely child-free and specialises in hosting couples. Unsurprisingly, it was awarded Best for Romance by Conde Naste this year and in 2017 for Best Service.

When you arrive you’ll immediately understand why. From the moment you set foot in Bohemia you are treated like royalty. After your baggage is safely stored, you’re taken to the Atelier Bar to enjoy any cocktail from its extensive and exciting menu. Then a hotel representative will accompany you and make you feel at home. Afterwards, you are given a tour of the hotel, showing you all its facilities so that you can make the most of them from the get-go. All of this makes a refreshing change from the “wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am” approach taken by the majority of hotels these days.

Purple and cream colored hotel lobby

Bohemia Suites & Spa – types of hotel rooms

Unlike most mainstream hotels which stick to drabby beige or other neutral colours in order to not offend visitors from goodness knows what, Bohemia bravely uses splashes of vibrant colours wherever possible, and it works. Different sized pools hug the hotel at various locations – just perfect for visitors who want to chase the sun through the course of the day.

All the rooms are spacious, luxurious, and offer breathtaking views. If you stay in one of these below, you will feel like royalty.

  • Deluxe Double Room: Size 28m2, 2 Adults, King Size Bed
  • Junior Suite: 59m2, 2 Adults, King Size Bed
  • Corner Junior Suites: 70m2, 2 Adults, King Size Bed
  • Sky Suites: 105m2, 3 Adults, Super King Size Bed

Bohemia Suites & Spa gardens, pools and facilities

Guests can relax in the hotel's gardens, in the shade of Royal palms as well as exotic plants, curry flowers, orchids, cacti and more. The lush gardens are very sizeable – a stunning 500m2.

The hotel has two pools and a jacuzzi for those who just want to chill. The biggest pool measures 22m in length for those of you who like to keep fit, even while on holiday. It even includes 3 water streams as well as underwater music! The smaller pool measures 20m2.

There’s also a well equipped, air-conditioned gym with an excellent sound system, which you can control with TV and keyboard. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9-11 am yoga classes are available, while on Mondays and Wednesdays personal training sessions are on offer, too. Everything is free for guests. On some days during breakfast, a nutritionist is available to advise you on how to lead a healthier lifestyle, if you wish.

10 minutes' walk away from Bohemia Suites & Spa Hotel

If you prefer to exercise in fresh air, the beach is 7 minutes’ walk away. During the early morning you'll see runners puffing along the coast. If you’re a beach bum, you’re in paradise. Unlike a lot of pebbly British beaches, this beach actually consists of proper sand and stretches for many kilometres.

People walking on a beach in spain

What’s more, there are the Maspalomas Sand Dunes on the corner of the beach, which makes for impressive photos around 7 pm, i.e. near sunset.

Sand dunes with animal tracks

Lastly, if you fancy a bit of golf, there is an amazing golf club just a 10-minute walk away!

Bohemia Suites, Siam Spa

If you want to feel truly pampered, go straight to Bohemia's Siam Spa where you can enjoy top-of-the-range treatments in a tranquil environment which will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Immerse yourself into the world of senses in this authentic Thai luxury spa. Treat yourself to a relaxing Thai massage or a healing Balinese treatment to get the best of Asian wellness.

A health centre is also available on site if you are in need of healing. Professionals will help you develop better habits for yourself.

The interior of a spa

Bohemia Suites & Spa food

Don’t get me started on the food, because I can talk about it forever, as you'll see subsequently with lots of photos to give you a good idea of what the kitchen is capable of. If you want to have traditional tapas like papas arrugadas, you’ll need to go elsewhere. However, trust me, once you’ve tried the food you wouldn’t want to leave the hotel. A half-board option, called MyWay, is available, which allows guests to enjoy an awesome breakfast every morning while giving them the power to decide when and where they would like to eat next, be it poolside or in the restaurant.

So, if you haven't noticed, Bohemia is like an oasis in a swamp of average food. The hotel offers 5-star cocktails, fast food, breakfast, dinner – whatever you opt for, you won’t be disappointed. Just check out the array of appetising beverages and food I had during my stay here.

Purple and orange funky chairs in a restaurant

Most noteworthy, Bohemia is about attention to detail and personal touch. Staff are cordial and very quickly learn your name and even preferences. They are proactive and, if you ever need anything, will assist you at the drop of a hat. They can organise your excursions, too. If it's available on the island, they will make it happen.

This approach definitely shows in the Bohemia's masterclasses, which the hotel offers to guests as a free service.

360° Restaurant

This is one of the best restaurants you'll come across for dining in Gran Canaria. It is located on the 8th floor of the Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel. On offer is a high-end dining experience with modern furniture and a 360° view of the beach and the Dunes of Maspalomas! This is simply the ideal restaurant for sunny breakfasts, warm lunches and romantic dinners at sunset! The sumptuous menus were carefully developed by Juan Bertolín, chef of 360º restaurant. He is a well-recognised chef and has been awarded 2nd place at IV Salón Gastronómico de Canarias 2017 and 3rd place in 2018. The menus were also co-designed by Mikel Portugal, who was awarded 3rd place as best assistant, 2018.

Breakfast

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it gets taken seriously at Bohemia. This isn't your standard British fare of deep-fried foods with sausages and baked beans. Instead, there are various types of tropical fruit on offer, a decent array of European cheeses and cold meat cuts. The big square of fresh honeycomb every morning is a nice touch and who can say no to starting the day with some bubbly?

A buffet of food

If the buffet spread isn't enough for you, an exciting cooked breakfast menu is available. I certainly couldn't get enough of the Huevos Rancheros below!

Degustation Menu:

The Tasting menu is a compilation of the most popular dishes at the 360º Restaurant, offering 6 courses accompanied by a wine pairing.

The 7 Islands menu – called Air from Sea to Sand

A complete 100% Canarian experience using fresh, seasonal products of the island. 7 courses accompanied by suitable beverages, each dish is a representation of the products of each of the 7 Canary Islands. A definite must-try if you are looking for innovative cuisine based on the Canaries!

The opening hours of the restaurant are:

Monday – Thursday 06:00pm – 11:00pm
Friday, Saturday & Sunday 01:00pm – 11:00pm

P.S. All vegetarian and vegan items are specifically marked, making it one of the top vegan restaurants in Gran Canaria to visit.

Atelier Cocktail Bar

This is a truly unique bar offering stunning panoramic and scenic views of the Atlantic as well as the Dunes of Maspalomas. Explore your senses with the best cocktail you are bound to have! The Atelier Cocktail Bar has a vibrant cocktail menu, on which they also include their own twist on old classics. One can see that much thought has been put into each creation, from the presentation of the cocktail, the nibbles accompanying it, to the actual cocktail – it's the whole package. Truly superb cocktails. Honestly, the best I've ever had.

A fancy rooftop bar at nighttime

Atelier Cocktail Bar

Below you'll find a list of Atelier's signature cocktails:

  • CO2 NEGRONI: Twist from negroni. Same recipe, but served with a siphon.
  • AGED MARTINEZ: Twist from classic Martinez. The quantity of the ingredients are different and includes “their touch” by aging it in a barrel.
  • EXPERIMENTAL MARTINI: Twist on Dry Martini. Same recipe but with 3 essential oils added and presented separately to make the guest play and try different tones.
  • ASIAN MARY: Twist on the Bloody Mary. Asian touch by using wasabi and ginger, with rosemary macerated in the vodka. Zubrowka vodka, tomato juice, soja sauce, Worcestershire sauce, celery bitters.
  • JULEP COLADA: Pina Colada Twist. Cocktail 100% homemade and 100% Canarian. They changed the classic recipe by macerating Canarian rum with coconut and Pineapple from El Hierro jam.
  • PISCO HIBISCO: Twist of pisco sour. They added hibiscus infused pisco. Orange and grapefruit bitters, lemon sugar, egg white.
  • GUANCHE ALEXANDER: Twist of brandy Alexander. Same recipe with a Canarian touch: Canarian Rum: Aldea single cane rum and a pinch of gofio. Almond milk, Mozart white liqueur.
  • THE ITALIAN JOB: Twist of espresso Martini. They changed the recipe with Canarian rum, Aldea 8 estra añejo. Illy coffee liqueur, Mozart white chocolate bitters and an espresso coffee.
  • ENGLISH BREAKFAST: Twist on classic breakfast Martini. Hendricks gin, artisan black-tea liqueur, bitter orange marmalade and orange bitters.
  • HOUSE OLD FASHIONED: Twist on old fashioned. Used spiced macerated rum instead of bourbon.
  • MONKEY AND SAND: Twist on Blood and Sand. Monkey shoulder whisky macerated with maraschino cherries, orange and carrot juice. Carlo Alberto red vermouth, artisan blackberry liqueur and orange bitters.

Sapphire Cocktail Bar

The first tropical cocktail, the first conversation with friends and guests takes place in this appealing bar which links the hotel with the ample garden terrace. Enjoy a fresh and light midday snack in an informal environment or a sun-downer under an amazing blue sky.

Not only does it serve luscious drinks throughout the day but the food is pretty good too. Less poncy and more down-to-earth. Think along the lines of your favourite Italian food such as pizza and pasta, plus burgers and other international dishes.

Opening hours: from 11.00am – 7.00pm every day

room service

One of the best features of the hotel. Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel offers 24-hour room service every day. They even have a room service menu. Needless to say, guests can order practically anything from the hotel restaurants or bars while they are open. Below you'll see what kind of food to expect when you don't want to leave the room. It actually makes you want to stay in, doesn't it?!?

free masterclasses for guests – get togethers

The “get together” is a moment to share between the management of the hotel and the guests. The guests of Bohemia Suites and Spa can learn all there is to know about some of the hotel's distinct products and services in the form of an intimate masterclass. As a result you can try your hand at:

  • Photography
  • Cuisine
  • Cocktails
  • Gardening
  • Cava tasting
  • Champagne tasting
  • Distilled drinks tasting
  • Hand massage
  • Homemade lotions

Naturally, I took part in the masterclasses!

Two bottles of wine and a bottle of pellagrino

cookery masterclass

The first one was a Cookery Masterclass. During this, we were taught by the talented Chef Juan, who has tons of culinary experience behind him. I learned how to prepare and gut fresh Canarian fish that we'd caught while on one of the hotel's excursions. He also went with us to the Mercadillo de Vega de San Mateo market and helped us pick out the best possible produce for our recipes which we cooked in the masterclass. These included Canarian peppers, also called picones.
The recipes include the grilled wreckfish and the grilled bonito recipe. Make sure you check out these authentic recipes. During the masterclass, I had tons of fun understanding how to correctly gut and fillet a freshly caught fish. Thank you chef Juan for this lifetime skill!
We also prepared a beetroot gazpacho, tuna tartare, air of avocado mojo. Check out a video of our masterclass below where you'll also find the recipes!
https://youtu.be/q7yLCmdXadQ

cocktail masterclass

The second masterclass I took part in was the Cocktail Masterclass. This was a really handy masterclass because the bar staff will teach you how to put your own twist on classic cocktails and more. In the end, we made completely custom cocktails from the array of fresh fruit available to experiment with. Delicious!

excursions

Again, pursuing my love of discovering new places and food, I found the hotel excursions to be the most exciting part of my stay! Bohemia Suites and Spa can organise any type of excursion or trip on request, provided the activity is available on Gran Canaria Island. How incredible is that?

Some of the most popular excursions they offer are:

  • Exclusive trip with chauffeur
  • Helicopter tour
  • Private Sailboat or Yacht tour
  • Buggy tour
  • Star-gazing
  • Fishing

As such, I decided to go on a fishing trip, on which I finally learned how to go fishing for bonito and other fish. The trip itself was a marvellous idea and a trip of a lifetime. Check out my trip here.

A man holding a piece of fish from a fishing rod

If you decide to go on a similar quest, make sure you take plenty of sun cream with you.

The excursion didn't end there! The second part was a visit to the Mercadillo de Vega de San Mateo market which I've already mentioned above. It was amazing to discover the island's fresh produce. We were accompanied by Chef Juan, who gave us incredible suggestions for picking ingredients.

What about Bohemia Suites & Spa appeal to you the most?

Bohemia Suites & Spa is one of the best hotels in the Island of Gran Canaria. Located on the famous Playa del Ingles, treat yourself to a bit of luxury.

P.S. I was a guest of Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel.

As you drive south down the TF-65 it is very hard to miss Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf. The terracotta sticks out prominently to the right, while the sleepy town of Los Abrigos is situated on the left.

Huge terracotta building
Spacious 5-star hotel foyer
San Blas Nature resort corridor
Tenerife holiday gardens
Sandos cave structure in Tenerife

Ample indoor and outdoor parking is available and once you walk into the establishment you truly get to appreciate just how big the resort is. The Spanish villa-style and terracotta remains consistent throughout the place and as much was done as possible to conserve the natural habitat as well. Native plants, such as various cacti and banana trees are dotted throughout to convey the message you’re never far from nature.

Tanning area
Deck chairs at pool
Swimming facilities at San Blas in Tenerife

The majority of the pools are lined down the center of the resort and on either side are the hotel’s rooms, almost like two long extended arms giving the pools a hug. Bodies glisten with sunscreen from early morning but fortunately, you will always find a spare sunbed. There are adult-only zones for those who want to get away from screeching kids. For people who prefer to swim in the sea, the beach is a very short walk away - a destination for weddings.

Beach wedding destination

Sandos is all-inclusive and there are plenty of activities for young and old. Morning and afternoon sessions are available at the Mini Club with activities such as arts and crafts, pool games and face painting. My daughter came back from these events with a huge smile on her face and excitedly chatting away, telling me everything that happened.

Children playing swimming games
Wooden snail rocking chair

Adults can participate in gym exercise classes in the morning, and in the afternoon so rifle shooting, kayak, play a ping pong tournament, wall climbing, tennis, paddling and volleyball, to name a few. Golf is also available. In the evenings there are live performances in the Magma room. Don’t forget to visit the nature resort!

Nightlife is active but not rowdy. The bar is heavily frequented, the later it gets. That said, the weather is simply so beautiful that at the other end of the resort people sit and chat with a glass of wine while the kids are playing pool - all in all a very relaxed atmosphere. In summer live shows are performed outside in the arena.

There are two restaurants onsite. La Cueva de Atxoña is a buffet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a capacity of 450 seats. While picky Western palates are catered for with the usual junk food such as pizza, pasta, nuggets etc. etc. etc., I am pleased that they do serve traditional food such as Spanish tortillas, padron peppers, aubergine dishes, churros and more, as well.

There are usually four types of fish, each cooked beautifully, at every meal. There is a big salad bar available, some made-up salads are already assembled but plain ingredients are also at hand to make up your own imaginative concoction. There is a large turnover of food but while it’s by no means haute cuisine, the quality is satisfactory. Kids and adults alike are well chuffed with the wide selection of desserts.  For gourmet meals, La Proa is open to the public and guests, at a price.

Sandos was built in 2008 and the rooms remain modern, neat and a joy to stay in. Of course, Wifi is available to keep in contact with loved ones, work and whatnot. Thanks to its sheer size I wouldn’t have guessed that there were almost 1200 guests at the resort when I stayed there. At no point did it feel crowded. In fact, quite the opposite.

Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf is the type of place where you can easily stay for a week and simply not go anywhere - my recipe for a perfect break. For those we start to feel a bit twitchy after a while, there is a shuttle service to Las Americas for a bit of action.

Our family tremendously enjoyed our stay and my daughter loved the delightful staff so much that she asked whether we could move to Tenerife. One day!

The coast of las palmas

things to do in Las Palmas

First and foremost, before we begin, please note that Las Palmas is the name of the province as well as the city. Las Palmas Province, also known as the Province of Las Palmas encompasses the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and several minor islands. Whereas, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the full name of the capital city of Gran Canaria island. The Island of Gran Canaria is just one of the Canary Islands located off the coast of Northwestern Africa. The Canary Islands belong to Spain.

The city of Las Palmas ranks 9th on the list of largest cities of Spain. Not only is it a thriving capital with tons of things to see, it is also a popular stop for cruise ships as well as shoppers who wish to find duty-free items! The population of Las Palmas is roughly 400,000. Geographically speaking, you can find the city of Las Palmas in the northeastern corner of Gran Canaria. In fact, it's only 150km or 93 miles away from the Moroccan coast!

The city was established in the year 1478 by Juan Rejon as Real de Las Palmas. A few years later, in 1492, Christopher Columbus actually anchored in a Las Palmas port, spending some time in the Canaries, prior to his first famous voyage to the Americas.

A century later, Las Palmas saw some violence in the notorious Battle of Las Palmas, which resulted from the Anglo-Spanish War on Gran Canaria. Although some of the city was destroyed, Las Palmas is rich in history, charming architecture and many cultural sites. The city has a lot of colourful houses with heavy Portuguese influence. Some say, it resembles Brazil's favelas. Best of all, you can all visit these by foot!

best things to do in Las Palmas

1. Poema del Mar

This is a must see! Poema del Mar, or 'Poem of the Sea' is a top-notch aquarium that is home to many marine species, exotic fish and plants. Most noteworthy, get really for an out of this world experience. It has the largest state-of-the-art fish tank in the world, an impressive fish tunnel and more. Check out my review of the Poema del Mar aquarium here.

2. Mercado de Vegueta

The Mercado de Vegueta is one of the most beautiful markets in Las Palmas. Visiting this market is one of the top foodie things to do in Las Palmas. You'll come across many types of local cheeses, fresh produce, meats, fruits and fresh Atlantic fish.

The market is open from Monday to Saturday from 6:30 am to 2-3 pm, depending on the day. The market is closed on Sunday.

4. Mendizabal

Take a stroll down this historic street. The name suggests that the street is dangerous, however, this couldn't be further from the truth. It is also home of the infamous Toriador Agustun Millares Torres.

Address: Calle Mendizábal, 35001 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria, Spain

5. Cathedral Santa Ana

The Cathedral of Santa Ana, also known as Las Palmas Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral. It is located in the Vegueta neighbourhood and is considered as one of Las Palmas's top landmarks. The Cathedral was constructed in 1570 with Gothic and Romanesque styles. Until recently, (1819), this cathedral was the only one on the Canary Islands!  The most beautiful part though is the scenic square in front of the Cathedral. Make sure that visiting this cathedral is on your list of things to do in Gran Canaria.

Address: Plaza Sta. Ana 13, 35001 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria, Spain

6. Old Town Hall

The Las Palmas Town Hall is another one of the city's popular landmarks. It is a 19th century building located on the Plaza of Santa Ana next to the cathedral. Locals refer to the Las Palmas Town Hall as Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Address: La Naval 229, 35001 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria, Spain

7. Dog Statues

These dog statues are a monument to the guardians of Gran Canaria. They are also known as Los Perros de la Plaza de Santa Ana, located at the square in front of the cathedral. There, you'll have a glimpse of the typical Canarian courtyard characteristics. The first floor of the surrounding buildings have a wooden balcony. The courtyard has a fountain in the middle and tall palm trees beside it. You can sit beside the dog statues on the benches and also enjoy the lovely potted flowers which surround you.

These cast iron dogs are life-sized and were donated to the City by James Miller (also known as Diego Miller).

8. Espiritus Santa Square

This quiet and beautiful square is located in the Vegueta neighbourhood in the old town of Las Palmas. It is also known as Plaza del Espiritu Santo. This square is the starting point of the water supply network on the island of Gran Canaria. The fountain as outlined by Ponce de Leon remains one of the few fountains on the island with Spanish-style architecture.

The square dates back to the 17th century. In the past, this was the noble area of Las Palmas, where wealthy people built their manor houses. The more wealth a family had, the more status statements were made in housing.

9. Gabinete Literario

Translated to Literary Cabinet, this is easily one of the most beautiful buildings in Las Palmas. It contains many decorative ornaments and exotic domes to catch the eye. The interior is rather modern, it includes a main staircase which leads to the Golden Hall (a former ballroom) decorated in the French style. In addition, artist Manuel González Méndez has painted the ceiling rather grandly in mythological themes. The Red Hall, also, is home to ceiling art and a collection of oil paintings from the early 20th century.

10. Playa de Las Alcaravaneras

This is a golden sandy beach with an urban vibe. It is located in the middle of the port which is home to many sailboats. There are lots of sports facilities on the beach, the waters are generally calmer - perfect for paddle boarding. A handy tip though, I wouldn't recommend going to the beach on a windy day.

The weather, as usual, here in the UK has taken a turn for the worse. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that winter is coming. As days grow shorter, the sky seems almost permanently grey making you wonder if you imagined that it ever was blue in the first place. It's wet. It's windy. It's just downright miserable.

Hotel exterior

Spacious entrance

Aerial view of spa

My inbox exploded yet again, overflowing with emails, people awaiting my response. I never seem to complete my diligently devised daily to-do list. My calendar is jam-packed with commitments. My house needs a constant declutter and everywhere I look there's work to do.

Spa corridor

Beautiful spa

Relax in a cave

As I'm sitting here, staring longingly at the photos, I wish I could be in Tenerife. I wish I could check into Hotel Botanico, which is situated in Puerto de la Cruz in the northern part of the island. I wish I could walk in its world renowned spa and don a fluffy white bathrobe with matching slippers. I remember being asked where I would like to have my Thai massage, in a darkened room or on the Thai pagoda. I opted for the former, prizing privacy and peace. It took me a while to fully relax but got there in the end as the masseuse manipulated my body as I've never experienced before. Staff are recruited from all over the world and only the cream of the crop is selected.

Sun loungers

Heated pool

Authentic thai decor

In fact, the masseuse had me so relaxed that by the time I had the following treatment of a full Ayurvedic body scrubbing, I was past the point of giving a toss that the therapist scrubbed my boobs until they were squeaky clean. Strangely, a range of emotions also leaked out of me in the process. Afterwards I felt refreshed and energised. The Oriental Spa & Garden remains on the forefront when it comes to the latest beauty treatments and advancements. It even offers weeklong Ayurvedic retreats, customised to your body type, whether it's pitta, kapha or vatha.

Book treatments

Red flowers and black elephants

Minimalist design

Serene surroundings

Massage pools

I wish I could have stayed at the spa the whole day. I wish I could just lounge next to the pool and catch some much needed vitamin D and afterwards plunge into the idyllic blue water close by. Perhaps I could veg out in the jacuzzi or visit the Japanese sauna. How foreign yet appealing it sounds to spend a day doing absolutely nothing.

Multiple level staircase

Living room

When the sun starts to hide below the horizon I want to hop up the red spiral staircase and walk down the Thai and Spanish artwork dotted corridor to my Senator Suite. My spacious room was Thai themed, as is the whole hotel, and the bathroom luxurious. My daughter was quick to hug the plush elephant on the bed, wanting to take it home. With it came a printed message that Hotel Botanico is an environmental-friendly hotel and guests are nudged to be green as far as resources are concerned. A good lesson to the young.

Tropical setting

If you've got the cash to splash, you can stay at the Michael Jackson Suite, which takes splendour to the next level. If that's not good enough, there's the Bill Clinton Suite, which is double to size of the former and includes a large terrace, three bedrooms, a whirlpool, and amazing views to boot.

Food-wise, you definitely won't go hungry. A full buffet breakfast is available every morning and during the day Palmera Real, the restaurant in the garden, serves lunch. We had a fabulous authentic Thai dinner at The Oriental Restaurant. In the evening there are two other restaurants to choose from. La Parilla, a Spanish restaurant, and Il Pappagallo, serving Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Throughout the day Bar Hall serves refreshments and in the evenings live entertainment is provided and I enjoyed a jazz night while I was there.

Golf is available for those that way inclined. A simple walk in the hotel's expansive garden would also suffice. A summer children's programme is available if you're planning on truly taking time off and sending your kids on educational trips to Loro Parque.

I wish I could take my kids for a stroll in the garden, simply enjoying nature. I wish I had the time to teach them how to play pool and simply mess about. I wish I could take them both to Loro Parque and let them be in awe of Mother Nature. I wish I could take them to Siam Park for the sheer fun and exhilaration. I wish I could show them there's more to life than living in the UK. I wish I lived in a warm place like Tenerife where temperature are between 20-28°C throughout the year.

Well, that was a lot of wishing. Back to work, I guess.

Eat in nature

Family friendly walks

If you are looking to relax there, there are a couple of massages you can experience. For instance, you should definitely try the body lymph drainage massage.

Learn everything there is to know about Loro Parque in this review, and why you should visit it next time you go to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.

Thai Entrance at Loro Parque

Loro Park in Tenerife

On 28 May 2016, the world lost another gorilla, when a kid fell into its enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo. People were outraged and wanted to point fingers. Who was to blame? The dopey mother or the zoo with dodgy security? Pretty soon there was a roaring debate in the UK as to whether animals should even be kept in captivity in the first place.

Recently I visited another zoo and witnessed two orangutans in adjacent cages staring at each other forlornly. What separated them were iron bars but they attempted to get as close to each other as possible yet accepted defeat. It's easy to understand how an image like that can tug at the heart strings and make just about any person want to pump his fist in outrage to the concept of keeping a wild animal in captivity.

Big trees in zoo

Loro Parque started off in 1972 as a refuge for 150 parrots putting up Europe's first Parrot Show. Over the past 44 years its population exploded to over 4000 with about 350 species, making it the world's largest diverse collection of parrots.

Parrot at Loro Parque

What I love about Loro Park is that it's essentially a mini-ecosystem. As you walk around the zoo you'll immediately notice that the place is in absolute pristine condition. With blue sky, warm weather, neatly trimmed lawns and foliage nobody can complain but there is much more than meets the eye.

While all the plants in the zoo might appear to simply be there for visual appeal, they serve a far bigger function than meets the eye. Since the environment in Tenerife is perfect for so many variety of plants, they grow in abundance, including gum trees. The following are readily available in the zoo:

  • Manna (Eucalyptus viminalis)
  • Lemon Scented (Corymbia citriodora)
  • Blue Gums (Eucalyptus Globulus)
  • Silver Leaf Stringy Bark (Eucalyptus Alligatrix)
  • Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis)
  • Iron Bark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon)

Three white birds

I don't know how this happened, but somehow society has brainwashed us into thinking we can get away with feeding parrots and other pet birds a staple diet of seeds. Perhaps throw in a piece of fruit or two if they've been particularly good birds. No wonder so many animals die in pet lovers' care or start plucking out their feathers, or simply just get ill.

If you want your birds to be happy and in peak condition, you need to educate yourself. Basically, you need to supply them with the types of food they will eat in the wild. With the birds requiring varied diet from multiple food sources, this is no small feat.

Bird eating some seed

Numerous parts of the Eucalyptus trees - flowers, buds, gum nuts, bark, leaves and branches - are fed to the birds, which are a vital part of the birds' natural diet.  Chilli plants are dotted around the whole zoo and the fruit are actually fed to the animals. Fun fact: did you know that parrots have no tastebuds? They eat these with chilli peppers with utter glee.

Red flower bud

White bird eating a flower

Another example is the ginger flower plant, pictured below. These are fed to the birds, lorikeets, gorillas and chimps. The ginger root is also consumed by the animals. Just like humans, animals enjoy the multitude of benefits of ginger, which includes the following properties:

  • anti-bacterial
  • anti-inflammatory
  • anti-oxidant
  • anti-parasitic effect, and more

The birds recognise food items from a distance and never have I seen birds demolish flowers with such gusto!

White and orange tulips

If you are tempted to nick a fruit from Loro Parque, then be warned - everything is covered with pepper spray. The latter acts as a natural pesticide because the zoo wants to stay in tune with nature, steering clear from using chemicals wherever possible.

Pineapple in a bush

Another great example of how Loro Parque is constantly striving got excellency is the upgrading of the flamingos' habitat.

I first visited Tenerife in 2016 and this is what it looked like.

Flamingo lake and garden

In 2019, this is the same location, which was my third visit. The difference? The zoo planted natural plants in the water and uses no chlorinated water.

Pink flamingos on a green grass

The Animal Embassy is based in African huts on site where the breeding of parrots take place. Although parrots make some of the best parents in the world, sometimes nature fails and this is where humans take over. Through the glass windows baby parrots at each growth stage can be observed.

Loro Parque Foundation is funded solely by Loro Park. The organisation plays a pivotal role in able to breed up to 1500 birds annually thus sustaining endangered species and supporting numerous conservation projects around the world such as working with the Brazilian government to recuperate two rare species of blue macaws.

Loro Parque Animals

Quick tip: arrive early to make the most of your visit to see all the animals because there is plenty to see and do! Below is a watered down list to give you an idea of which animals to expect on your visit.

Mammals

Chimps, dolphins, gorillas, jaguars, lions, hippos, sea lions, marmosets, otters, killer whales, anteater, sloths, meerkats, tiger, red pandas and capybaras

Birds

Flamingos, cranes, parrots, penguins and swans

Fish

Jellyfish, Koi and there's a whole Aquarium for you to explore!

Reptiles

Alligators, Iguanas and Tortoises

At Katandra Treetops colourful birds from Australia and Asia can be observed who have no qualms posing for having their pictures taken whether sitting in a tree or eating. Parrots aren't the only birds to be found at the zoo. Chilean Flamingos and Crowned Cranes walk about freely.

Crane on grass

Time passes extremely quickly and the onslaught of information can be overwhelming at times. Little ones can unwind at Kinderlandia and there are seven eateries to choose from.

Loro Park Shows

Loro Show

The Loro Show is where parrots fly over and interact with the audience, just showing off exactly how clever these animals are with their mathematical skills and cheeky humour.

Woman teaching a class

Orca Ocean

There are seven orcas at Orca Ocean who perform, even a deaf one, called Morgan, who receives guidance through special hand and light signals. They regularly have a whale of a time utterly soaking members of the audience with their vigorous splashing.

Smiling killer whale

Sea Lions

The Sea Lions are little show-offs and when they're not balancing balls on their noses they are performing CPR on drowned staff.

Sea Lions balancing balls

Dolphinarium

If you love sea mammals you're in for a treat. A lot of people are and the theatres are packed sardine-style at every show. Educational tidbits are fed to the crowd, from how to look after stranded dolphins to fun facts. It is amazing to see what these animals are capable of.

Performing dolphins

Planet Penguin

Atlantic Puffins can be seen swimming in pristine conditions and kids can try to spot Mumble from Happy Feet at the Planet Penguin exhibit.

Atlantic puffins

Penguins from Antarctica

Aquarium

When it comes to water, Loro Parque certainly doesn't shy away from it. There is a special water filtration system in place that ensures the animals enjoy water that's much cleaner than water fit for human consumption. Numerous displays of turtles, a plethora of fish species, sharks and jelly fish can be gawked at at The Aquarium and Aqua Viva.

Swimming Sea Bass

Blue jellyfish

In peak season, Loro Parque can get busy. By the way, that's an understatement. If you're seriously stuffed for time and need to prioritise your visit, here are the shows in my order of preference:

  1. Orca Ocean
  2. Dolphinarium
  3. Sea Lions
  4. Planet Penguin
  5. Loro Show
  6. Aquarium
  7. Naturavision

Lots of people in the audience

Two monkeys playing

And so we arrive at the Gorilla enclosure. There is no way that a kid will fall in here or anywhere else for that matter. Up close views of the animals can be enjoyed thanks to large glass windows and the gorillas appear to be qualified yoga instructors.

Which brings me back to the original debate. Should wild animals be kept in captivity? No. Yet, those who have emotional outcries with pitch forks angrily poking the air rarely offer any solutions. What is the alternative? Let the animals free? Just exactly how long will these animals survive in the wild with the scary rate deforestation and illegal hunting taking place?

Greedy Gourmet visits Loro Parque

This settles the argument for me. It comes down to whether zoos do more harm than good or vice versa. With the high quality of care these animals receive from leading scientists around the world I know where my vote goes. The best you can do is support institutions such as Loro Parque and increase awareness to those around you in order to only support businesses who do the environment good. Only then may these animals one day roam free again...

__________

In 0AC 200 million people inhabited the earth. By the 18th century, the population blew up to 1 billion. In 1900, 2 billion. 2000.... 6 billion. In a mere 11 years the human population added another 1 billion to its already burgeoning size. With the human population growing exponentially, what are the implications for life on this planet?

At the moment, 50% of the world's population lives in cities. In 30 years the number will go up to 85%.

Deforestation continues to take place at an alarming rate. Before man started to "leave his mark" on Earth, 60 million km, which equates to 44%, of the world's surface hosted forests. By the year 2050, only 22% would be left, i.e. 50% of forests would have been destroyed.

The result?

For every hectare of tropical forest, an average of 704 animals can be found. Do the sums. No wonder numerous animal and plant species go extinct on a daily basis.

Family of chimps

Adiós, Dodo. Aloha, Mauritius Blue Pigeon. Arrivederci, Black-Fronted Parakeet. Ciao, Quagga. Auf Wiedersehen, Tasmanian Wolf. Bon voyage, Golden Toad.

These are but a fraction of the animals that have gone extinct since the 1800's.

Next on the hit list is elephants. In 1900, 10 million of these magnificent creatures roamed in the wild, now a stark 600 000 are left.

Dolphins are snuffing it big time as well. Fishing nets and equipment kill 300 000 of these mammals every year. Environmental pollution causes weakness and illnesses in cetaceans, especially orcas. Countries such as Japan, Peru, Russia and Canada appeared to have developed an appetite to eat them and thanks to the overfishing of oceans, sea life suffers as a consequence, due to the scarcity of food.

Green jellyfish

The list for how humans negatively impact the environment goes on an on.

If only there was a clear cut solution, but there isn't. One obvious way to reduce the impact on the environment is through the reduction of the human population, although there is no humane way of going about. The second option is to slow down the speed of growth, which means China has had the right idea all along with its one child policy.

In this regard, Prince William and Kate having a third child is utterly irresponsible, considering they are public figures setting an example to the masses. Cue the further growth of the British nation popping out a throng of babies, called George, Charlotte or whatnot.

Jumping Orcas

So while the number of different species are dwindling on a daily basis, zoos and aquariums are doing their best to conserve them with limited resources. Granted, not all zoos are created equal so it's important to support the good ones. The latter safeguard the genetic reserves of endangered species, study the animals to obtain valuable information and raise awareness by educating visitors of the status quo.

You can read more about the Loro Parque Foundation and donate. All proceeds go towards nature.

Loro Parque Opening Times

Loro park is open from 8:30am to 6:45pm every day of the week.

Loro Park Showtimes

Here is the timetable for all the shows listed above. Just as the opening times, the showtimes are the same every day.

  • Loro show: 10:25 - 11:50 - 13:30 - 15:00 - 16:00 - 17:30
  • Orca Ocean: 11:45 - 14:00 - 16:45
  • Sea Lions: 09:35 - 12:30 - 14:15 - 15:30 - 16:55
  • Dolphinarium: 11:00 - 13:15 - 14:45 - 16:00
  • Naturavision: 11:45 - 14:45 - 17:15
  • Planet Penguin: open from 08:30 to 18:00
  • Aquarium: open from 10:00 to 18:45

Where to eat

There are a few restaurants in Loro Parque but the best one is Casa Pepe. Those who automatically shun deep-fried junk food would be delighted with this restaurant which serves Canarian specialities tapas-style. Every single dish served was fabulous, from the classic Papas Arrugadas, Spanish Tortilla, Mussels, succulent Pork Skewers to the Goat's Cheese with Mojo Sauces and Fried Banana dessert.

Canarian Beef Stew

My favourites were the Red Peppers Stuffed with Seafood and Spicy Octopus, simply because they're so unusual. A kids' menu is available so even the greatest of fusspots, i.e. my daughter, found something to enjoy.

Roasted Calamari

Where to stay

While there are numerous hotels in the area, Hotel Botanico is simply the best. It is about a 10 minute drive away.

Parking at Loro Parque

Ample space is available at the zoo - surface space as well as two levels underground. The price is €4 Euros per day.

Loro Parque Tickets

Prices start at €38 per adult and €26 per child. There are different special offers where you can get reasonable discount though. The Twin Ticket - where you can visit Loro Parque as well as Siam Park - is a popular option.

Poema del Mar is an aquarium located on the island of Gran Canaria, Spain. This aquarium is also referred to as Poema de Mar. Get ready for a jaw-dropping, out of this world experience and a deep dive into the blue world.

The white exterior of Poema del Mar

You'll be able to see extraordinary ocean creatures through the largest glass window pane in the world. Some of Poema del Mar's inhabitants include turtles, exotic fish, king crabs, manta rays, and hammerhead sharks.

The inside of the aquarium, trees and wooden trees

It is a fun and educational activity for all types of visitors, and surely a memorable one at that! So, have you ever had the chance to stand on a cylindrical fish tank tunnel?

You'll feel like you're a part of the ocean! Visit Poema del Mar during your stay at the Canary Islands and enjoy!

People walking through the aqaurium

Marvel at the state-of-the-art aquarium and exotic colours of the species. The biodiversity in the giant cylindrical coral reef are an eye-opening experience, letting visitors see just how rich our oceans are.

Poema del Mar Aquarium, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Poema del Mar, which in Spanish translates to 'Poem of the Sea' is a super-modern aquarium in the warm and sunny harbour of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In essence, the aquarium contains 35 ecosystems which are completely unique from around the world.

A lizard on a rock

You'll also have the opportunity to see more than 350 species (aquatic and exotic marine creatures). Needless to say, you can also take stunning photographs of more than 2,000 species of flora. As you can see, Poema del Mar leaves much room to explore.

It certainly makes us think a little bit about our serious problem with plastic as well as the multiple solutions that one can start applying. In addition, this specific aquarium has the largest curved glass tank in the world! It's home to hammerhead sharks, manta ray and hundreds of vibrant fish.

Those of you who are well-acquainted with the world of aquariums know that sharks are almost impossible to catch a glimpse of. This is because sharks need an extremely large tank size for them to have a hospitable environment. So, just imagine how large this tank really is!

Poema del Mar by the Loro Parque company

The Poema del Mar Aquarium in Las Palmas is owned and was developed by the company called Loro Parque. Loro Parque is a theme park in Tenerife, which is also regarded as one of the best zoos in Europe.
In fact, I've visited Loro Parque twice. See the review of my first visit here and my second visit here.
A side view of a fish tank
A yellow and white fish in water
A black and white fish The Loro Parque company also developed Siam Park. By the way, Siam Park won 'The Best Zoo' and the 'Best Water Park in the World'. Similarly, I also visited Siam Park twice. See my review of the first visit here and the second visit here.

Ultimately, the company also showcase the same level of commitment as regards innovation and conservation at Poema del Mar. When one considers Loro Parque's long history of protecting the environment, its experience with over 100 conservation projects, and its multiple international awards and distinctions - one can see why Poema del Mar is such a success.

2019 review – Loro Parque Poema del Mar, Las Palmas

In my experience, this is one of the best places in Gran Canaria. Every single tank takes your breath away. I loved learning about all types of marine surface ecosystem, deep marine life, fresh water species and well as the abundant flora on display. I also had a chance to photograph a shy chameleon as well as a huge alligator.

My favourite part was standing in the fish tunnel, gazing at striped, colourful fish. I also thought that the glowing jelly fish in a dark tank were incredible, although I wouldn't want to get stung by one. I've heard it's quite painful.

Also, during my visit to Poema del Mar, funnily enough I came across a creature that's not so unfamiliar to me. This was the king crab! During my travels to Northern Norway, way inside the Arctic Circle, I took part in a king crab safari.

A purple crab

Overall, this was a very pleasant experience and a must-see attraction. Especially if you are already on the islands. The exhibits and habitats for the animals have been finished to a very high standard – there are even custom trees made to replicate specific environments. I highly recommend visiting this extraordinary aquarium!

Poema del Mar – tickets

Purchasing tickets for Poema del Mar is a piece of cake. Otherwise, you can always purchase them on-site directly. I recommend having a sneak peak on the offerings. You'll see there is also an option to purchase a ticket which includes bus service (as well as lunch, for children's tickets).

Residents of Las Palmas can purchase discounted tickets on site. It is also noteworthy to mention that children under the age of four have free admittance. So, this would make the perfect, affordable family activity if you've got little ones.

Poema del Mar – address

The aquarium is located in the province of Las Palmas, on the Canary Islands. Yes, you will have to fly to the Canary Islands if you want to experience this extraordinary aquarium. Nowadays, you can get really cheap flights.

In terms of the location, luckily enough, the aquarium is just shy of 200 metres away from the famous Las Canteras Beach. Also, it lies directly next to Sanapu Dock, the cruise ship pier.

Parking isn't a big issue as it is close to one of the best beaches. Simply park your car in a side street near the beach and walk to the aquarium (approx. 10 minutes).

Sandos San Blas Resort was built with the idea of keeping the natural habitat intact while also conserving surrounding areas as much as possible. One of its attractions is the Reserva Ambiental de San Blas, which is an educational experience for inquisitive tourists.

San Blas Nature Reserve Tour

Hotel guests receive special rates but the tour is open to the public as well. Before I tell you about the tour, I'd like you to take heed.

Wear proper walking shoes! Although the first half the tour is classroom stuff, the second half you will find yourself out in the wild. Forget about even pavements, clear markings and any mollycoddling the nanny state known as Britain would do for you. Refreshingly, here in Spain you actually have to use your eyes, ears and head to go about and for once be more aware as you cover the rugged terrain. Secondly, wear suncream. Lots of it. Plus a sunhat, sun glasses and whatever else you can think of. Be ready to channel your inner Indiana Jones. We struck it lucky on the day that it was uncharacteristically cloudy in the south of Tenerife.

Terra cotta complex

The tour is split into three sections. In the depths of the building's belly is where tour starts. The first part, dubbed the Historical Experience Tunnel, is full sensory experience explaining the formation of Tenerife, simulating earthquakes and describing the natural conditions. You walk from room to room as time and events progress through history. Conditions are recreated to help you experience and understand what life was like before the internet, such as what it's like to be at sea in dodgy boat with nauseous people and screaming babies. No wait, this still happens today.

Leaving Sandos Hotel

The second part lasts another 20 minutes and you are guided to a large theatre with plenty of swivel chairs in the center. Each of the four walls have got a screen and a video plays on each one in turn, which is where the chairs come in handy as you need to change direction. Museum pieces, protected by glass are installed in the walls.

English script on tour

Armed with newfound knowledge, you have now graduated to experience the real deal in the outside world, the San Blas Ravine.

How headsets work

Hotel guests are free to go for walks whenever pleases them but much more can be gained by taking the tour and going on a few self-guided walks later.

You are handed flimsy headphones. If you have small ears, be prepared to have it consistently fall off. Unlike me, who keeps stopping and capturing whatever tickles my fancy like a maniac, it's best to stick to the tour guide. If you are out of range, you will lose reception and the recording will cut off. Seriously, why wouldn't you want to stay close to this happy, smily man?!?

Snapping photos of view

Tourists in San Blas

We left the hotel and hit the road. The tour guide stopped us at places, pointing out indigenous plants and telling bit of history.

This is a far cry from green pastures of England but the arid landscape is rather picturesque and there are a lot of photo opportunities.

Assisting to make the tour come to life, there are a few instances where actors come along and act out scenes from the olden days -from selling apples to calling the gods, which adds to the colourful experience.

We walked deeper and deeper into the ravine and suddenly there was this little oasis, with boat and all. The guide pulled at a rope which made the boat slowly glide across the dam on the thick green water.

After a little break off our feet we climbed up, up and up, and admired the view from the top. The "grass" is greener on the other side indeed.

Two hour walking tour

Sweaty and tired after so many steps - yes, my FitBit was in a state of shock - it appeared that the tour finished. I couldn't help but fret.... did we have to walk all the way back?!? Fortunately not, there was a little cart waiting to take us back to the hotel. Phew.

Tree in Tenerife
Looking down at landscape

Surprisingly, Tenerife has a rich history, human and flora-wise. The trip is well-designed and balanced with theory and experience. The pace was good and at no point was I bored, neither was my six-year old daughter. Fortunately, there are no venomous snakes or poisonous creepy crawlies on the island, so you're safe. Oh, and don't forget to bring along water!

about the island of Gran Canaria

The island of Gran Canaria is one of Spain's Canary Islands located off the northwest coast of Africa. It's the third largest island and home to the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The island has a hot, desert climate with warm temperatures all-year-round. That's why Gran Canaria is one of the best vacation destinations, even in the winter time.

Cathedral Canarian

I had a lovely time discovering the local gastronomy, learning about the island's rich history and more. I hope this list of things to do in Gran Canaria will inspire you to visit this lovely island. It's only a short flight away!

top must-see attractions and things to do in Gran Canaria

1. Explore the sand dunes of Maspalomas

The Maspalomas sand dunes are one of the most popular attractions on the entire island. They make a stunning sight – 404 hectares of huge sand dunes that one can also enjoy from the nearby beach. I highly recommend taking a walk on the dunes by the sunset. It is truly an extraordinary experience that is very hard to come by on the continent. Dare to ride the sand dunes by camelback or horseback?

2. Watch the sunset from the Maspalomas lighthouse

This is one of the most popular viewpoints when it comes to sunsets. The Maspalomas lighthouse is still in operation today as an active lighthouse. It is located on the southern side of the island. In addition, it is right next to the famous Maspalomas sand dunes and the Maspalomas beach. Today, it is also known for being in the proximity of many bats and shops!

3. Visit the Maipés de Agaete (city of Agaete)

This is one of the most famous Spanish Heritage Sites in the world. Also called the necropolis del Maipes, it is located in the small town of Agaete in the northwestern part of Gran Canaria. The word maipes is derived from the Spanish word which means bad land and, as its name suggest, it is in fact a burial site. It has mounds of earth over graves that date back centuries. Indeed, some of the burial grounds are over 1300-years old and built on lava rocks.

4. Go to the Puerto de Agaete

Harbour Canarian

At the Puerto de Agaete, you'll have the opportunity to take some pictures of the Dragon's Tail. A stretch of impressive cliffs, seen all together, looks like a dragon's tail. You can visit this place with the help of Trip Gran Canaria tour guides.

5. See the Roque Nublo

Picon

Explore this ancient volcanic rock formation that has become one of the iconic attractions on the island. In fact, it is almost 70 metres tall, and 1,800 m above sea level. In essence, it is a striking geological site that offers many scenic trails along the way. Don't miss out on Roque Nublo. It's located at the heart of Gran Canaria.

6. Visit the Caldera de Bandama

Volcaniccrater

The Caldera de Bandama is a 1,000 m volcanic crater that offers breathtaking hiking trails. At the bottom of the crater, one can find different colours and variations of volcanic ash. It is also the meeting point of three different Gran Canaria provinces.

7. Go marvel at the Painted Cave – Archaeological Museum in Gáldar

Located in the town of Galdar (in the northwestern part of Gran Canaria), this Painted Cave Museum is a must-see! Firstly, it is also known as Cueva pintada. Inside the cave, you'll find paintings from the pre-Hispanic Canaries era. It is considered as the islands' 'Sistine Chapel' by its inhabitants. This museum site also displays artefacts from a group of excavated caves in which aboriginals kept and used products, utensils, etc. A trip to the painted cave can be organised by Trip Gran Canaria tour guides.

General price: 6€/Reduced price: 3€.
For more information, click here.

8. Visit the Archaeological site, Cenobio de Valerón

Steps Cave

Landscapes Volcanic

The Caves of Valeron are an archaeological site and a monastery. The caves are located in Santa Maria de Guia. The caves were built before Roman times and today form one of the most popular cultural sites (a collective granary system of caves on several levels). Originally, the Romans believed it to be a location where the harimaguadas (spiritual ladies dedicated to religious life) lived. From that idea comes the name Cenobio (monastery, convent). This trip was organised by the Trip Gran Canaria tour guides.

General price: 3€/Reduced price: 2€. For more information, click here.

9. Visit Gáldar, also known as the City of Kings

When the first conquerors arrived at Gran Canaria, the island was divided in two guanartematos or kingdoms: Gáldar (or Agaldar, as the indigenous knew the area), that controlled the centre, north and west, and Telde, that controlled the south, east and part of the centre. From that division, Gáldar emerged from the strongest and principal kingdom. Today, it is considered one of the best pre-Hispanic villages on the island.

10. Follow Christopher Columbus at the Casa-Museo de Colón

Located in Las Palmas, the Casa de Colon is rumoured to have once housed Christopher Columbus. Today, it remains a popular landmark displaying Canarian architecture, offers views of ancient nautical maps and much more.

11. Visit the Palmitos Park

This is the largest zoological park in the Canary Islands. It is an excellent experience that's also family friendly. You can enjoy some time petting dolphins and much more. Click here for more information.

12. Visit Poema del Mar

A must-see attraction while you are on this island! It has the world's largest fish tank and offers breathtaking views in a fish tunnel and more. Explore the aquatic lives of the sea creatures and different marine species. Check out my review of Poema del Mar here.

This is the neighbouring beach to Playa del Inglés. Surrounded by sand dunes, it is one of the most iconic beaches. Perfect for a lovely stroll at sunset.

16. Stay at the Puerto Rico beach

A very relaxing, enclosed beach with stunning views. It carries a Caribbean vibe.

17. Enjoy the Amadores beach

Only 20 minutes away from the Puerto Rico beach is the Amadores beach. The shallow waters and the constant sunshine make this one of the warmest and sunniest beaches in Gran Canaria. Beautiful clifftops right along the beach.

18. Swim at the Las Canteras beach

A beach scene in spain

This is the longest beach on the island – 2.8 km. It is a very lively beach right in the capital city, the busy port of Las Palmas. So, you can enjoy the city of Las Palmas and its beach, too.

19. Enjoy the nature at Güigüí beach

One of the most beautiful natural beaches on the island. Given the difficulty of getting there, this beach is perfect if you like beaches that are less crowded. Stunning views encompass the setting of the beach and cliffs.

20. Feel like royalty at the Anfi del Mar on the Playa de las Teresitas

One of the most beautiful man-made stretches of beach. This is true paradise. Enjoy the turquoise waters, along with palm trees, flowers and much more.

28. Play golf at the Caldera – Real Club De Golf de Bandama

This is the oldest golf course in Spain – the Real Club de Golf de Bandama. It dates back from the end of the XIX century. Due to the presence of the golf course, the huge basin of the Caldera is known as "the nineteenth hole". The area was named after Daniel Van Damme, a Belgian citizen who in the XVII century planted grapevines in the volcanic soil, known here as picón. This was organised by the Trip Gran Canaria tour guides.

33. Visit the Los Lirios Cellar (Bandama)

Vineyard Loslirios

We visited Los Lirios Cellar, one of the biggest on the island at 70,000 sqm. They use two different ways to cultivate the grapes without any use of chemicals. The grapes are planted in the "picón" (common name, lapilli or lapili). Our guide there was called Yurena.

Grapes

The cellar is close to Bandama Caldera, a crater of 200 m depth and 1000 m diameter, formed between 4000 and 5000 years ago. The caves in it were used by "aboriginals" to store various products. Later, its fertile volcanic soils were found to be ideal for supporting the cultivation of crops such as grapes. The caldera is also recommended for a stiff hike. For more information, see the Santa Brígida cellar and vineyard Los Lirios. This was organised by the Trip Gran Canaria tour guides.

Wine

34. Visit the La Laja coffee plantation and cellar in the Agaete Valley

Coffee Plantation

The La Laja plantation is located in Los Berrazales (Agaete Valley). There, we saw some of the various products growing in that plantation, though their principal products are the coffee and wine. The kind of coffee they have is natural and typical Arabica, which is considered as the best. Also, they produce seven different wines. Our guide there was Ulises, and we also met the plantation's owner, Víctor. Here, I had the opportunity to taste their coffee marmalade with their cheese. This was organised by theTrip Gran Canaria tour guides.

After that, we went for lunch in a restaurant on the north coast. We tried the pepper of Padrón, fried cheese with tomato marmalade, and octopus gallego style. For dessert, we enjoyed a lovely bizcocho de Moya mousse.

Last year I was fortunate to visit Tenerife again and made a beeline for Siam Park with my daughter and mother in tow. Yet again it was an amazing experience.

Siam Park was in a pristine condition, just as it was the last time I visited. On this occasion there was the added bonus that we had a private villa for the day that added a touch of luxury.

While there is nothing wrong with the attraction's general locker rooms and communal facilities, if anyone could choose between sharing or having your own space and bathroom, 99.99% of the population would opt for the latter.

Loungers at Siam Park

As you walk down the path to Siam Beach, the wave generator will appear in front of you, and on the left there is a densely forested hill. If you walk down the path veering to the left, up the hill with the beach to your right, you'll come across the entrance for the private villas that are available to hire for a day.

The palm trees provide immediate relief from the relentless sun and with the shade comes some coolness. Villas are spaced well apart for adequate privacy and a bathroom, which comprises a shower and toilet, are shared between two huts.

Wooden door

Siam Park is one busy resort but in May it is quieter than during the July to September summer holiday period. Squeals could still be heard from afar but they were joyous ones that added to the holiday vibe as I scored a mightily uneven tan on the sun lounger.

There is a mini-bar that has ice cold drinks waiting to quench your thirst and you can even laze on the comfortable seating provided and watch TV. Our villa also had a jacuzzi with several fancy settings and my daughter had a ball splashing around while we got dressed in our swim suits.

Thai House appeared to be shut on this occasion so The Beach Club is where you will find lunch. The typical American junk food repertoire is offered but there are Thai items available as well, such as the spring rolls and Thai curry. Freshly cut fruit is always welcome and who can say no to a slice of chocolate cake?

If you have kids and would like to create fond memories of good times, take them to Siam Park. There are plenty of rides to choose from, catering for every age.

As someone who's the opposite of an adrenaline junkie, I took my 7 year old to as many rides as my heart could handle and she loved every second of it. I have no idea where she got her spunk from as she urged me to go deeper and deeper into the water at Siam Beach, giddy with excitement as the next wave headed our way. My reality: this tsunami's going to kill me. Her reality: this is just a splash of water, more more - wheeee!

She keeps asking when we can go back.

P.S. I was a guest of Siam Park.

A special thanks to canarias.com for assisting with car hire that helped me to reach all my destinations in Tenerife.
